The Gmap Pedometer

I like to go for a daily walk, and sometimes when I get back I'll get in the car and drive the route to see how far I walked. Not the best use of time or gas, I guess, but now I have a better way!

I have stumbled across yet another Google application that is guaranteed to keep you spellbound for at least 3 minutes. I'm sure some of you have already heard of this, but I'm equally sure that most of you will not have.

Google maps have been around for a while, and I have forgotten how I ever managed to get around before I became aware of them. Now I can ignore the directions people give me (and most people are terrible at giving directions), and simply Google the address. So much quicker and easier. Gmaps are an essential part of my daily life, especially when I have to find somewhere that's in the middle of nowhere.

Did you know that you could also use Gmaps as a pedometer?  You can sign up, start a walking program, and have Gmaps track your progress. This application is called the Gmap Pedometer. Go there as soon as you have finished reading this blog.

It's pretty simple, and I'll give you an example. I like to walk from time to time. Walking regularly is healthy, especially when you shouldn't be driving. I will use this example to calculate the distance from the Welfare Office in Trenton to McDonalds with a quick stop at the Liquor Store.

First I find the Welfare Office and click the balloon thingamajig on the address.

Then I plot my route by clicking the balloon at the stops that I make with the final stop being the last one.

Finally, the screen on the left will tell me exactly how far I have walked. In this case it was 1.4947 miles. That's quite a bit of walking. No wonder people usually take taxis when they walk this route.

Joking aside, if you are an avid walker or cyclist, the Gmap pedometer could be a fun tool to use. It might help you keep track of all those miles you are logging.
