If you are planning a move to the Boston area, one of the many things to consider when relocating besides the availability of houses for sale in Boston, is also the proximity to interesting and educational things to do.  While this may not be a deciding factor in where you choose to live, it will no doubt play an important role in getting to know as much as possible about your new neighborhood and its history.

If you happen to be searching for property in the Brookline area, be sure to set aside a bit of time off from house hunting to take a wander through the Lars Anderson Museum.  If you are interested in the history of the automobile then this is a local attraction you won’t want to miss.

Two wealthy Boston socialites, Isabel and Lars Anderson had a love of the automobile and purchased a new model almost every year.  As new models were acquired, the previous year’s model was added to the collection and kept in the family carriage house.  Eventually the Andersons started opening their carriage house for local residents to come and browse their fine collection, and the inkling of a museum was born.

The very first car purchased by the couple was a Winton 4hp Runabout manufactured in 1899.  The collection grew to include over thirty two models of automobile and an assortment of horse drawn carriages.  Today in the carriage house museum, many of the carriages remain on display in addition to approximately fourteen originally owned automobiles.  The couple continued to purchase vehicles and retire them to their carriage house collection until the death of Isabel Anderson in 1948.  Upon her death, the carriage house was given to the Veteran Motor Car Association of America who opened the property to the public as a real museum in 1949.

The original carriage house is situated on the grounds of the Anderson estate which is now known as Lars Anderson Park.  It is a three story building which grew from a working stable to an automotive repair garage.  Currently, the administrative offices are housed on the third story but in its day, that area housed the carriage house employees and their families.  The Lars Anderson Museum has been designated a historical landmark and is well known around the world by antique automobile collectors.

Situated in the heart of the Brookline area, the park boasts a magnificent view of the Boston skyline and offers plenty of amenities for a day of fun.  There are numerous walking trails on the property as well as picnic and grill areas and a beautiful pond that was created by Isabel Anderson as a quiet place to sit and enjoy the outdoors.  For winter time enjoyment, an ice rink is maintained and kept open to the public for some old fashioned outdoor skating fun.

Rich in area history and romance, the Lars Anderson Museum of Brookline is a local attraction that warrants a day of exploring, especially by anyone who is looking for real estate in Boston and considering a move to this fine neighborhood.
