Denver Colorado is the place to be Labor Day Weekend -  Just for the Ski Sales Alone!

It may still look like this on the slopes:

Steamboat Colorado

But before long, it is going to look like this:

Denver snow

If you have lived in Denver for any amount of time, you know one thing for sure - Labor Day Weekend is quite the time to find some great buys for ski & board gear.  And if you are new to Denver & need to stock up on your mountain gear, this weekend is the time to find some great deals and have a fun time doing so at the same time.  Here are some of the sales you will find around town this coming weekend in the Denver Area.  I have only been skiing for the last several years, so I have had plenty of winter gear I have had to acquire in recent years.  And for those of us with kids that grow faster than weeds, I generally need to re-stock winter gear each year - so I truly appreciate these sales.    Most of the highly discounted merchandise is last years model's - but it isn't unusual to find some pre-sales on the current years products as well, especially if you stop in early.

Sports Authority (formerly Gart's) - the SNIAGRAB sale  What is SNIAGRAB?  Bargains, spelled backward.  And I have found my fair share of Bargains at SNIAGRAB over the years.  Head toward downtown to the Broadway and 10th Sports Castle location for the premier event of SNIAGRAB.  Many of the satellite Denver stores do not offer the full SNIAGRAB  merchandise and as much of the hoopla as the Sports Castle location, so my recommendation is head downtown and do so early.  The Littleton location at Wadsworth expanded the store to a tent outside last year, so they may do that again.  Information on actual sale availability is not yet available on the website as of yet.   We have always lucked out here finding North Face & Columbia apparel at very low prices.  We have also scored big on ski helmets, especially for the kids.  There is generally activities added to the sale and sometimes celebrity athlete appearances add to the experience as well.  Sports Authority generally includes a decent coupon book with purchases as well that will help you throughout the ski season.  Denver ski trade ins

Colorado Ski & Golf - SkiRex- Look for the big green dinosaur and you will find the Ski Rex Sale.  This is one of our regular stores.  Our big finds here generally include bargain prices on last year's Spyder-wear - especially for kid's half zip ski shirts.  We have only shopped at the Littleton and Aurora locations, but there is one in Colorado Springs and Arvada as well.  If you sign up for the email specials, you can receive a VIP invite to shop before the public.  For the best selection, this is a good idea.  If season ski rentals is your thing, this has an affordable program for both children and adults.  The kids rental program is more of a buy used equipment cheap and trade in next year program - this is where we outfit our own children for their skis  & they will definitely need longer skis this year.  (see photo to the right).

If you have shopped at the Sports Authority or Colorado Ski & Golf sales in past years, you may be lucky enough to have received the VIP shop ahead card to get in the sale earlier this week.  If you have it, use it - the best selections always go early.  If you didn't receive it, ask at the store how to get it early next year or sign up on-line for the Colorado Ski & Golf program.

Christy Sports- Not quite the  big "event' as the other two stores, but Christy Sports has served us well in the past.  This has been a favorite for hard to find Hot Chilly's long-johns in hard to find sizes, and my daughter always finds just the right winter hat here.  This has also been a great location to find different ski pass programs, including the very popular 4 pass programs for various resorts.  *Note - if you are going to buy the passes - do not wait until the last weekend to do so - you will pay dearly with a LONG wait in line.  Purchase them in the first few weeks they are available when the line is non-existent.

REI - I haven't yet been to their ski sales, but have bought plenty of other outdoor sports equipment here.  This will be the first year we pop by the REI ski sales Labor Day Weekend.

Eskimo Ski Shop - Since we are talking ski & snow - I want to include one shout out for one of very favorite ski shops.  For top notch stellar service, check out the very small but very homey Eskimo Ski on Belleview just east of Broadway.  And don't let the little size fool you, this place is packed with great winter gear and always includes really great personal service.  My wife needed new skis last year and wasn't in the mood to buy all new equipment.  Instead she used their wonderful adult equipment season rental and was very pleased with what she received, price and the service.  *Note - Eskimo Ski has limited hours until its close to the winter, so check the site for hours before heading over.

Here's one more tip to share on something to do now to save money later- Look into purchasing one of the various local Coupon Books.  There are many great coupons available (for lift tickets, rentals, etc) in books such as ebooks, GoldC and the Entertainment Book.  Many local non-profits and schools are selling these books NOW for fund-raisers, so if you can get your hands on one, its a great idea to save a bundle this winter.

Happy Ski Shopping Denver!

Sniagrab was the best! Probably still is. Pueblo now has a Sports Authority - I didn't realize Gart Brothers was gone. But sniagrab is a great time to stock up! And by the way, I prefer the slopes in the summer - a lovely hue of green.

Dena - Sniagrab is great, you are right.  Garts changed names last year - I think this is their second year having the Snigrab sale under the new name.

Steve, you are obviously the expert in ski shopping!  I have been to them all at one time or another.  Up here in Summit County I like Christy Sport's tent sale, which just started this Friday.  However, I bought nothing.  I need new boots this year, but they didn't have the ones I need, and I bought skis last year.  I have lots of clothes and stocked up on my hot chillys over the summer.

I also used to get my grandkids' skis and boots at Colorado Ski and Golf every year.  They have a great trade in program.  A lot of people go to the ski swaps up here too, and not all the equipment is used; much of it is new.

Joanne, I have to admit Laura helped me remember where we shop for what.  She is the true shopping expert.  But it sure is fun to scoot around and see all the ski stuff out & about.  It gets you psyched.   It is probably the only type of shopping I enjoy (except for home shopping of course...)

I heard on the news today that there were already people THIS MORNING lined up outside the Sports Castle waiting to get in tomorrow.  Even knowing how crowded it gets, I was surprised to hear that.
