Saturday September 18 was a day of celebration for the entire city and county of Broomfield, over 20,000 people turned out for the annual Broomfield Days event at North Midway Park. This day is meant to highlight the range of community groups that make Broomfield such an engaging and fun place to live.
It all started with a huge parade including more than 75 marching bands, dancers, cars clubs and floats. The parade's awards categories included classic car clubs, school spirit, multicultural, religious, business and many more. Kids laughed at the tiny El Jebel Shriner dune buggies and chased down Denver Nuggets' mascot Rocky for hugs and high-fives. Other kids surrounded the Colorado Avalanche's new mascot Bernie the St. Bernard.
After the parade everyone swarmed the park on Midway Ave. that was packed with food booths, carnival games, stages for singers, a petting zoo, pony rides - wow! Curious and admiring kids and adults checked out over 50 classic cars. "Clowns" in different age categories competed on one stage for crowd applause and prizes -everything from gymnastics to singing to jokes and dancing were part of the entertainment sponsored by the Optimists' Club.
Then the popular Best Dressed Dog Contest grabbed everyone's attention: entries included a mermaid, little red riding hood, an angel, and dozens more. Laylasaurus, a dinosaur-dog "mix" came out as the winner.
True to Broomfield's respect for the environment, the entire event had a zero waste goal, including requirements upon all vendors that that sign agreements they would only use compostable or recyclable materials and avoid certain materials as part of their set-up and hand-outs to the crowd. They were prompted to use local businesses for acceptable materials and everyone just had a great time checking out all the vendors. It's a perfect example of the ways weekends are always filled with great events in Colorado.
