I’ll admit I like to stay up late, wake up early, but what happens when you forget which is which?

I love to stay up late. I do my best thinking then. (Kids are asleep) But, I also love to get up early, I think that may be for the same reason and many times I will get on the phone with east coast banks early in the morning as well, but what happens when you forget which is which?

Answering the phone in the middle of the night

Awhile back, I admit, I forgot to turn the ringer off on my phone. It was dark when I went to bed as it was close to midnight, but I got woken up out of a dead sleep when the phone was ringing. Now, I have been known to fall asleep on the couch with the speaker phone on waiting for a bank to answer. (Being on hold for 2 hours, tends to make me drowsy) So, out of pure instinct, I just picked up the phone and answered as I always do, “Thanks for calling, this is Todd, how can I serve you?”

Now, this seems simple enough, but when I got done saying that, my senses started to realize it was still dark, which means it was still real late or real early, either way, the phone should not be ringing! The voice on the other end of the phone said, “Oh, I thought I would get an answering machine, I’m sorry, my name is _______________, I was calling about you listing my home, did I wake you?”

When I looked at the clock, I noticed it said “3:37” and I told this person yes, but it was my fault, I forgot to shut off the phone and out of habit, just answered it. She was very apologetic as she works the night shift and sometimes just doesn’t think about it when she calls. But, she said, “After I dialed it was too late and I was just hoping to get your answering machine”

I said, “You know, I’m up, it happens, so let me go to my desk and let’s see what I can do for you, set an appointment, and I promise, I am one of those that will be back asleep in less than 2 minutes, so no worries.” She was so happy that I wasn’t mad, that she listed with me the very next day… of course after she woke up. But, just the same, I made a friend by just understanding mistakes happen.

What would you have done in the same situation? Would you have been mad she called or would you have made the best of the situation? I’m sure glad I made the decision I did as it got me another listing. That was two years ago and that listing sold in 3 days and we are still friends and we have a good laugh about that night. From time to time, if I happen to wake up in the middle of the night, I will shoot her and email or an IM via yahoo and say, “You up?”

Hey!

Loved the read.  That is great.

I answer the phone late at night too.  I like to see who the heck is calling so late. LOL

Todd I think it was meant to be.  I wear myself out not sleeping enough these days.  I try to sleep in whenever the chance presents itself.  Sleep is good for the body.

I'm sure I would have answered and taken care of it in the moment. I do answer calls at odd hours but lately I realized that I could have my Blackberry set to shut off and turn on at certain hours so that is what I have done now. We all make mistakes and sometimes we dial without thinking. Kudos to you for having understanding and patience!

I do need my beauty sleep...A LOT!

Obviously, you handled this one correctly.  And, the caller had the expectation of voice mail and wouldn't have expected you to answer.  So, it all turned out.  If the caller HAD expected you to answer and got MAD because you didn't, well, that's a totally different story.

I wouldn't be angry either, sounds like it was well worth it! I do like my phone's automatic turn off time at night and turn on time in the morning to prevent that sort of thing.

Todd I would have done the exact same thing.  You can wake me at 3 in the morning anytime if I can list your house.  I know the value of that call.

I would have also done that same thing. The client will never forget you and will give you referrals.  Just hope she doesn't tell them to call you n the middle of the night.  I have paper and pens all over my house ready to take down phone numbers. Late at night is just the best time to focus and get mountains of things done.

Hi Todd,

Funny story, out of habit, I often answer with the same “Hi, how can I help you?” line which makes it strange if I didn’t notice it was my sister dialing me.

I’m not sure I would have been as prompt as you on the uptake.  Correct in not being grumpy, heck, if I left the phone on, then its my fault. I simply assume everyone turns off the phone when they get to sleep. My response in your case would have been to say “Sorry, I’m half asleep, likely wont be at the top of my game, please call back and I’ll let it go to voicemail”.

And the next morning, I likely wouldn’t have remembered the call, and been really surprised and pleased at the message,

-Claude

What would I have done in your situation?  Honestly, unless your ring tone is as loud as a freight train I would have kept sleeping!  However, had it SOMEHOW managed to wake me, I hope I would have done the same.  Takes more than a ringing phone in the middle of the night to make me angry.  Great story!

Todd, you are so kind. I would have just hit the silent and then rolled back over. However, no one would ever have to apologize for calling me to list their home, no matter what time of the day or night! Shoot, wake me up anytime for that kind of call.

BTW, I have several times gotten the business just because I answered my phone...

I would have been nice on the phone, but then said to my wife, "Why in the world would anyone call someone else so late."  However, I usually don't even answer my phone in the middle of the day, so I definitely wouldn't at night.  I hate talking on the phone, so I rely heavily on my assistant and co-agents.

Always enjoy your posts...thanks for sharing.
