Mark your calendars! The annual Texas Mushroom Festival is scheduled for the weekend of Saturday, October 23rd.
Dubbed the “Mushroom Capital of Texas” by the State legislature in 2005, Madisonville is home to a large Monterey Mushroom farm that produces nearly 28 million pounds of mushrooms per year. Recognizing the importance of this industry in the life and employment of the community, Madisonville held its first Mushroom Festival in 2003, and the event has grown and flourished ever since. With attractions ranging from a sumptuous steak & mushroom dinner, arts & crafts vendors, antique car show, 5k run/walk, photo contest, and more, the festival has something for everyone. It's a great opportunity to soak up some sunshine in the mild October air while browsing the many displays and shops. It's also an enjoyable way to learn more about the local mushroom industry and the methods used to produce their tasty harvest.
As with any major community event, volunteers are greatly needed and appreciated! If you are in the area and in the mood to help, visit the "Volunteer" page on the Texas Mushroom Festival website for more details: http://www.texasmushroomfestival.com/2010_volunteer.html
I hope I'll see you there!
