SUPPLEMENTS - YES or NO?

By

Don't get excited  . . .  I'm not talking about supplementing your income (although that could be another post!)

I'm talking about your health here.  It has been proven that it is now impossible to get all of the vitamins and minerals we need simply from the foods we consume.  I'm curious about what other people supplement their diets with?

Vitamin E Capsules in Shape of Heart

I used to take an Omega 3-6-9 daily, but I have since learned that I should only be taking Omega 3.  (unless you are following a VERY low fat diet, you'll have far more that the recommended amount of omega 6 - The American Heart Association advises 5 - 10% of your daily calories should come from Omega6 for a reduced risk for cardiovascular disease)

Both Omega -3 and 6 are needed but they can compete with each other.  The ideal ratio for the two should be balanced 1:1 but the current American diet has disrupted that balance.  For example soybean oil has an Omega6 to Omega3 ratio of 10:1 and corn oil is 100:1  YIKES

Ideally we should be consuming oils such as olive, canola, safflower as well as consuming cold-water ocean fish such as salmon, tuna, sardines, herring and anchovies.    Even farmed salmon now has increased Omega3 levels.  (2 - 3 oz of water-packed canned tuna can provide 1 day's requirement of omega3)  And my fave, avocado!!!

When your body is burning fat for energy, the Omega3 fats are burned off faster than the others so it is important to consume more 3's to prevent reduced stores of this essential fatty acid.

(I ám not a Dr nor do I play one on TV -  speak to your physician before taking on any major diet or exercise program!!!!)

I also take a daily multivitamin with magnesium and calcium + vitamin D.   People are debating the benefit of including a chromium supplement which is supposedly important in the metabolism of fats and
carbs.  The jury is still out on this one so I'll pass!

What do you take each day?

The RDA is a minimum...  is a few extra calories going to make a big difference?

If you take time to study and learn, making sure it's well-grounded in science (not fad or business-interests) and see what works for you, that's a good thing.  In fact, many "experts" do often disagree... can anyone else know your own body better than you do?

My great-grandmother lived a very healthful life, to nearly 105, and never took a supplement in her life... rarely saw a doctor.  Do we live a more stressful life today? She lived through several world wars, and the Great Depression.

Supplements: yes, but be careful...  I often wonder if meditation would do better than supplements or medication?  lol ...

  • Timing and ratios are important for many supplements, and some education about that is beneficial.  Some supplements are not well absorbed without their other synergistic components found together in nature.  Some compete, should not be taken together.  Some minor undesired side effects can be countered.

  • Always look to see who funded the reports you are reading ... follow the money to discern their motivations.

  • Be observant for any undesirable side-effects, often there are alternatives or counter-measures to use.  For instance, I cannot use PS (phosphatidylserine) due to intolerable side effects (anti-serenity, anger-inducing) which only a few others have reported, most find it beneficial.

Besides a daily multi-vitamin (for insurance) I often use:

  • 5-HTP (mood stabilizer)

  • Ginko+Vinpocetine (for memory and brain function, I'm over 60)

  • ALA+ALC (on empty stomach, on arising, Acetyl-L-Carnitine and Alpha Lipoic Acid)

  • GABA for calming the jangled nerves from work stress, as needed.  Sub-lingual for faster effect

  • D-3, B-12 and Niacin (anti-aging, turn the clock back...)

It's amazing to me how a few specific vitamins, minerals, amino-acids, and herbal supplements can make as big or bigger difference than some prescription meds, with fewer side effects and better results, for some conditions, in my own direct, careful, personal experience.  Too bad that there's no money to fund that kind of research.

Recommended read: The Myth of the Clinical Trial...  I've read a lot about Homeopathy, and I think there must be something to it...  it's rooted in the basic German Science of the 1800's... there should be some modern science applied now, although with our current scientific instruments and medical technology we are barely able to measure the underlying processes involved. Who would fund that?  Why did the AMA systematically suppress Homeopathy education?

Want to hear something strange?  Yeah it's me #60 ~ who'd a thunk there would be something wierd about me! LOL!  I cannot take multivitimans for more that a week or I am awake and wired until 2:00 am then awake again at 5:00 am!  I've tried this about a dozen times over my lifetime so far and always with the same results! 1 - 1 1/2 weeks into them, NO SLEEP for me!

I take too many to list, but all prescribed by my naturopath physician. I'm going to have him test me though to see if that is why I don't sleep well after seeing Laura's comment above....hmmmmm. Maybe there is one that is the culprit.

I started breaking out in hives and he immediately knew it was too much Niacin and asked me if I had started taking any B vitamins and I had. I had added a B Complex to my normal B12 and that was it. He is scary smart so I'll ask him about the sleep thing. I never correlated no sleep to perhaps one of the supplements.......

I have great faith in naturopaths and I think they should be able to work alongside our GPs but that doesn't always happen!

I am also interested in learning more about this correlation between sleeplessness and vitamins.

Mulit vitamin, vitamin D, calcium so far. I've been on B12 injections a couple years ago. I'm going to look more into the supplements/minerals/vitamins suggested above.

I get almost all of our vitamins at the VitaminShoppe (they have an internet store also) and for the heart we take their Mega Fish Oil EPA-DHA softgel, CQ10, Evening Primrose Oil 1300 mg & Flax seed oil 1000 mg. We also take Calcium Citrate + magnesium & Vit D, B complex 100, triple strength Curcumin, Chromium Pic. 200 mcg, and last but not least quinine capsules that I import from Canada since the FDA outlawed their sale in the States (although they are the best product in the universe against leg cramps). There are 3 other capsules we take that are specifically for the joints - ah, the joys of getting older!!!!! And Ron takes some additional 'guy' supplements (and he doesn't take the Evening Primrose Oil, which I take for hormone balance). How is that for a daily supplement menu????

Hi Laura,

It's called the "Niacin Flush" effect.

You may know, Niacin supplements come in several varieties with different benefits.  There's Time Release and other forms, such as Niacin + Inositol, to avoid the very common "Niacin Skin Flush" — but the flush is considered as part of the benefit, and it's touted to help clear out some bad stuff from skin capillaries.  It's been claimed that flushing stops after a few weeks of regular use.  Ideally, you want to take just enough niacin to have a slight flush. This means a pinkness to your cheeks, ears, neck...

See:

shanti.com.au/cleanses/niacin_flush.htm

You can split the pill and take a smaller and smaller dose.  I use just HALF of a 300-mg tablet every few days, which reduces the flush to a tolerable level for me. Find the dosage that gives you some benefit without too much of any unpleasant side effects. Don't take Niacin before going out to an appointment!  {lol}  People may think you've been on a binge ... The Niacin Flush usually lasts about half an hour.

Nicotinamide (another form of Niacin) reportedly does not cause flushing or reduce cholesterol, and Nicotinamide may be toxic to the liver in high dosage, so why bother with that?

Niacin supplements should be avoided during pregnancy.

I am wondering, perhaps just one of the components of the multi-vitamin may be causing the sleeplessness? Maybe it's a buildup over time of something that you are sensitive to?  Different brands do have different formulations.

Please let us know whatever you discover. We're all basically the same, and we're also all subtly different...  vive la différence!
