There is no doubt that the way of doing business and succeeding has changed dramatically over the past several years.  The development of on-line presence, SEO, social networking and such has impacted us all.  Not all things internet are necessarily used for good, when in the wrong hands, they can in fact be used for evil.  It is important for us to remember to use our computers responsibly as well as conduct ourselves in public (on-line or in-person) responsibly so we never miss an opportunity to make that ever so important first impression

Some things in life never change, first impressions, making connections, authenticity and proving your worth have always been and will continue to be the cornerstones of success.  However, with the increase in connectivity to others we have today, it can actually be quite easy to make boob out of yourself and hurt your business.  Along with that, these simple mistakes can haunt you for a while since as we all know, what happens on-line stays on-line...FOREVER.

Here are a few tips for on-line etiquette that may help you avoid the pitfalls of becoming an Internet jacka$$ jerk.

  1. Never, ever post pictures of yourself or anyone else you wouldn't show your mother.  Along with that, don't allow others to take or post this type of photo.
  2. If you disagree with what someone says in a post, update, blog or article, commenting is perfectly acceptable but remember to be diplomatic, respectful and articulate.  Your foes (and fans) will be much more likely to listen and respect what you have to say. If you can't be respectful then don't comment - move on to the next topic!
  3. Have a little personality....you should let people get to know who you are not just what you do.  If your twitter stream, Facebook page, and blog are crammed with nothing but listings and advertisements, chances are you will be un-friended, un-followed or blocked.
  4. Listen to what others are doing on-line and respond accordingly.  Send out helpful and relevant information without tying it into a sales pitch.
  5. Make an effort to turn your on-line connections into real life connections.  If someone connects with you and sends you an email or phone number, FOLLOW up with them!  Attend a tweetup, a networking event or try to meet for coffee.  Find out if there is a way you can make their life better or just give them a smile!

There are no doubt many more tips and tricks to becoming successful at the on-line marketing game, these are just a few.  I would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions!

I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend!!

That is so true.  People can read into words too much and get the wrong impressions.  Especially texts and emails.  It never hurts to pick up the phone and talk to them.  It's also more personable.

Nice, job, Jeanna!  This is a great article and reminds us of what we often forget.  It really gets boring to follow someone who is trying to "sell" you something in every post.  it's much more fun to get to know someone's personality alongside their profession.

Shawn - It is so easy to "mis-read" a text or email out of context!  Plus I'm not really very witty via text =) Thanks for the comment!

Jennifer - Thank you! I completely agree, I would much rather follow folks who are fun and interesting with a sprinkle of sales thrown in!

Jeanna, thanks for your post.  I agree that along with all the "professional" jargon on our profiles people need to see that we're human after all.  There is a definitely limit to how personal we present ourselves, but there is also a limit to how real-estata obsessed we appear also.  Thanks for reminding us that we're in the people business before we're in the real estate business.  Best of luck with all your endeavors.  Cheers, Jark.

Jeanna - Great tips!  I especially like Tip #4....the more we listen to others and respond with helpful info the more we'll be known as responsive to people's needs....never a bad thing, IMO.

Jeanna, I especially like #2...Sometimes, it's good to let your comment sit there for a minute or 2 before you click 'submit'...Enjoy the day.

Very good post, I think it is always important to remember that posting things online means for every ones eyes and "ears."

So true!  We should also be aware of what others post about or of us.  Nothing like some "boob" posting photos of you online from the past, or from events where photos shouldn't be taken, like Vegas for example.  Get to know the UN-TAG, and be careful who you be-friend.
