STAGING SERVICES: Redesign

By
Home Stager with Creative Eye Home Staging

Home Stagers do more than prepare homes for sale!

There are a variety of services offered by home staging professionals to anyone occupying a home.  These services usually fall under the category of "Staging To Live".   Redesign is one of these services.

Are you tired of the way your home looks, but don't have the money to invest in a lot of new furnishings?  There is an answer to your dilemma-A Professional Home Stager!

before and after

Home Stager's first priority is always to "get the most ‘bang' for the buck."  They are used to working with very limited (and sometimes non-existent) budgets.   If you contact a Professional Home Stager about a redesign project, here is what you can expect:

•   Redesign can cover a wide range of things, so the Stager will ask you about your particular project.  Some of the questions you can expect are:

  • Will we be working in one room, or several?
  • Do you plan to paint?
  • Do you want to use only the things you already own?
  • Will large pieces of furniture need to be moved from one floor to another?
  • If you want to make any purchases, what is your budget?
  • What is your time frame?

•    If you do not plan to paint and are working with what you already have, you can probably schedule the project over the phone.  This type of redesign usually takes less than a day and you will get immediate satisfaction!

•     If the project is more complex, the Home Stager may want to meet with you in your home to learn more about your personal tastes.   Don't be surprised if you are asked to begin collecting pictures from magazines of rooms that you like.  This step is used in many of the staging services.  The only criteria for these pictures of rooms:  YOU LIKE THEM!  When you have collected several images, a pattern will usually emerge.

•     Before you begin the actual work, be sure to ask how you will be charged.  For Redesign Services, Professional Home Stagers usually work by the hour, but they often offer discount package pricing.  Prices can vary widely, so do your research.

•      Part of your research should include seeing examples of the Home Stager's work.  Be sure to ask . . .

  • if the pictures you are shown are the actual work of the stager
  • if the company is insured
  • for references

•      Enjoy the new feel of your home!  It has just had the equivalent of a facial or mini-face lift!

I tend to shy away from the redesign jobs unless I have already worked with a client Kim - I know I should do more but my heart is in the staging to sell over dwell market.  Love what you did though and know it's a very lucrative market!

Karen,  I haven't done much marketing to redesign and other "staging to live" prospects either.  Like you, it is usually when I've worked with them while they were selling their home and they are moving locally.  I'm trying through a short series of articles to make the public more aware of these services and the alternatives we offer for those with a smaller interior design budget!  Thanks.

Smart idea Kim to write a series on this to make the public more aware!

Kim....I've also been trying to do more on the re-design/re-style side.  Several former staging clients...plus friends/referrals...I enjoy it!

I really enjoy it too Kathy.  It is so nice to be able to help people with their home--on either end of the sale!

By the way Karen, I hadn't heard the expression "stage to dwell", but I love it!  I hope I can help to get the word out!

Since Interior Redesign is my bread and butter and what I base my entire business philosophy on using what a client already has (sorry, my Home Staging training came after my Interior Redesign Training in 1999,) I still struggle with the words some people use - "Staging to Live."  I know that those are Staged Homes words and I know that Barb added Interior Redesign training a few years after she launched her Home Staging Training, so perhaps those are marketing words she teaches to her students.

I don't need to define what "Home Staging" is, we all know, and then to put "Living" behind it seems so odd...  I'm sure you like me had a whole section of our training on the psychology of educating our client (the seller) of having to keep and maintain the product (the staged home) till it sells.  Isn't the motto of Staged Homes, THE WAY WE LIVE IN OUR HOMES IS NOT THE WAY WE PREPARE THEM FOR SALE....Barb Schwarz?

I think we as professional need to keep our definitions clean and not cross boarders, especially since one of the continued struggles is public education and perception.

Home Staging is Home Staging, Interior Redesign is Interior Redesign.

I appreciate your feedback Julea.  I agree preparation to sell a home is certainly different than redesign to enjoy your home!

Since many of us have Home Staging in our company names or taglines, it is important somehow to let the public know that we ALSO do redesign.  I believe I pointed out that Redesign is one of the other services offered by home stagers.  We also do color consults and downsizing to name a couple of services off of the top of my head.  I guess "stage to live" or "stage to dwell" is an umbrella to hold those other services.  I agree we need clarity, not confusion and I will certainly take your comments into consideration when marketing.  I'm a bit confused, do you offer home staging as well as interior redesign?
