This weekend there are two extraordinary events at Biore Field in Nashua, New Hampshire.  The opportunity to view the Wings of Freedom "living history" planes and the Experimental Aircraft Association free flights and learning experience

The Collings Foundation's Wings of Freedom 110-city nationwide tour will be visiting Nashua, New Hampshire at Biore Field on Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 - 5:00 on Monday 9:00 to noon. (Sept. 25-27).

You can view two WWII heavy bombers, a Boeing B-17 Flying fortress which is known as "nine O Nine",  a WWII Heavy Bomber, Consolidated B-24 Liberator "Witchcraft and a P-51 Mustang fighter "Betty Jane".

The B-17 is one of only 9 in flying condition in the United States. You will not want to miss this rare opportunity to see both the B-24J and Dual Control P-51C Mustang which are the sole remaining examples of their type still flying in the World.     Biore Field Nashua

Visitors are invited to explore the aircraft inside and out.  The  Cost is $12 for adults and $6 for children under 12 ~ and you get access to up-close viewing and tours through the inside of the aircraft.

You may also experience the opportunity to take a 30-minute flight aboard these aircraft. Flights on the B-17 or B-24 are $425 per person.   They are scheduled before and after the ground tour time.

Pilots can get some rare "stick time"  on the P-51 fighter.  Cost:  $2,200 for a half hour and $3,200 for a full hour. For reservations and information on flight experience call 800-568-8924

The Collings Foundation is a non-profit educational foundation devoted to organizing "living history" events that allow people to learn about history through direct participation.

The WINGS OF FREEDOM TOUR is in its 21st year.  It is a flying "tribute to the flight crews who flew them, the ground crews who maintained them, the workers who built them, the soldiers, sailors and airmen they helped protect and the citizens and families that share the freedom that they helped preserve."

The B-17 & B-24 were the backbone of the American effort during the war from 1942 to 1945.  These aircraft were famous for their ability to sustain damage and still accomplish the mission. Despite the risks of anti-aircraft fire, attacking enemy fighters, and the sub-zero temperatures, many B-17s and B-24s brought their crews home.

The P-51 Mustang was affectionately known as the bombers "Little Friend" because it saved countless crews from attacking axis fighters.

Unfortunately, many aircraft were scrapped for their raw aluminum after the war.

The Collings Foundation encourages local veterans and their families to visit and share their stories with the public.

In addition to the Wings of Freedom Tour, the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) http://www.eaa.org Chapter 35 will conduct a YOUNG EAGLES FLIGHT RALLY on September 25 at Boire Field.

FREE airplane rides will be offered to children ages 8-17.  They will learn how airplanes work and how pilots insure the safety of the passengers.

Each Child will receive a certificate and a Learn To Fly hand book which will make each child a "YOUNG EAGLE".

Kids can enjoy a ride in the flight simulator at Nashua Flight Simulator.  There also will be status displays of airplanes (War Birds, Home built, Aerobatic, antique and modern planes, unique cars and other aviation items).

Food will be available from the Midfield café outside.

To register your child's flight, go to Infinity Aviation at 117 Perimeter Road beginning at 10:00.  Registration will close at 3:00.  (Rain date 9/26).

New Hampshire was chosen as the Most Livable State in America! The Safest State in America, 2010. and the Fifth Healthiest State in America!

Hey Joan, I love seeing these plans fly above, the raw power and sound of their approach always amazes me. My grandfather flew in the B-17 Bombers during WW2, he had some amazing stories to share :)

Hi Joan,

Oh my gosh, what I would give to see these things. For me it's like being a part of living history. Earlier this year on Memorial Day I headed to the Palm Springs Air Museum to view the WWII plane and artificats on dislplays. That day they had a B-25 take off and fly over, it was really moving.

I'd love to be in your neck of the woods to see yours!

Joan taking a flight in one of those planes would be a special experience, but the price tag is a little high :)

Joan,
I love planes, you know what? when I was child I always wanted remote control helicopters or like these ones in your picture but by remote control, I have seen some great videos in youtube about professional people who get these puppies under remote control, I'm amazed how powerful these little birds are !

Great shot ! and another wonderful blog !

Hannah ~  I am trying to get over to the exibit to get some photos... The day started off with a family emergency and my plans got drastically changed.

Laura ~  Hoping that some of the WWII vets are around to share their stories and their experiences.  These men and women are real heros!

Lynda ~  I love the idea of "living history"  What a great opportunity to see these planes and to hear the stories of these amazing men and women who fought in WWII.

George ~  What an experience that wouldl be!  I am going to buy one lottery ticket... if I win... I'll take a flight.. If not I watch from the ground!  LOL

Liz ~  It is going to be a great event.  I am hoping to get some close up shots of some of the planes.

Joan -

My father-in-law was a WWII pilot and one of the best days of my life was touring the Air & Space Museum with him.  He had learned to fly as a very young man and knew all the great ones - Lindbergh, Wiley Post, Amelia Earhardt.  Just hearing those stores made my day.

Hi Joan, great photo and the event sounds like something that I would love. I would want to take the 30 min flight  and I would be stuck with the lens at the window. That would be my own brand of " living history" and I would thrilled. Of course then all the great photos would be in my posts for all to share. Too cool!

Hi Joan, that tour was down here a couple of weeks ago. The planes are impressive. Not very many took the flights, however. Signs of the times. They have been coming down here for several years, and the airport they use is not very far from our golf course, and we would see them flying quite often.

Michael - How very foruntate you were to have a father-in-law who had first hand stories and who knew Lindbergh, Wiley Post, Amelia Earhardt.  That is priceless!

Steve ~  Thanks for inviting me to your group "observances and celebrations" and also thanks for the feature.  I am enjoying the air show... wish the budget would permit a flight... maybe next time.

William ~  This event was made for YOU.  Not only the flying but the photo opportunities as well. People were on top of ladders, trucks and in the planes taking both still photos and videos - I can assure you I would not have gotten board with the photos!

Ed ~ I had no idea this tour went to so many cities. I am glad that you were able to see this "living exhibit" as well!  I have thoroughly enjoyed it.
