The Collings Foundation is a non-profit educational foundation devoted to organizing "living history" events that allow people to learn about history through direct participation.
The WINGS OF FREEDOM TOUR is in its 21st year. It is a flying "tribute to the flight crews who flew them, the ground crews who maintained them, the workers who built them, the soldiers, sailors and airmen they helped protect and the citizens and families that share the freedom that they helped preserve."
The B-17 & B-24 were the backbone of the American effort during the war from 1942 to 1945. These aircraft were famous for their ability to sustain damage and still accomplish the mission. Despite the risks of anti-aircraft fire, attacking enemy fighters, and the sub-zero temperatures, many B-17s and B-24s brought their crews home.
The P-51 Mustang was affectionately known as the bombers "Little Friend" because it saved countless crews from attacking axis fighters.
Unfortunately, many aircraft were scrapped for their raw aluminum after the war.
The Collings Foundation encourages local veterans and their families to visit and share their stories with the public.
In addition to the Wings of Freedom Tour, the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) http://www.eaa.org Chapter 35 will conduct a YOUNG EAGLES FLIGHT RALLY on September 25 at Boire Field.
FREE airplane rides will be offered to children ages 8-17. They will learn how airplanes work and how pilots insure the safety of the passengers.
Each Child will receive a certificate and a Learn To Fly hand book which will make each child a "YOUNG EAGLE".
Kids can enjoy a ride in the flight simulator at Nashua Flight Simulator. There also will be status displays of airplanes (War Birds, Home built, Aerobatic, antique and modern planes, unique cars and other aviation items).
Food will be available from the Midfield café outside.
To register your child's flight, go to Infinity Aviation at 117 Perimeter Road beginning at 10:00. Registration will close at 3:00. (Rain date 9/26).
New Hampshire was chosen as the Most Livable State in America! The Safest State in America, 2010. and the Fifth Healthiest State in America!
