Yes, the word social is used in a multitude of different ways these days. I recently signed up for a continuing education course at our local community college. The course subject is Social Marketing and Public Relations.
What I have learned so far is that the topic of Social Marketing is a much broader subject than I had even considered. One of our assignments was to check out some definitions, Social Marketing being one of them.
The other 3 homework definitions were:
What is Public Relations?
What is Community mobilization?
What is Community organizing?
After discussing the definition in class for Social Marketing we were given a flash quiz of fill in the blanks to reconstruct the definition. I thought it might be fun to recreate the quiz here to see how well you all do. I must admit I didn't score 100% on the quiz and thank goodness we weren't marked on it.
I could use the excuse that it had been a long day at work and life and it was pretty late in the evening but I know that's as bad as the dog ate my homework excuse.
I'm being generous here and only giving the exact words for the definition. We had many other choices to pick from.
Andreason Social Marketing Definition:
" Social Marketing is the application of commercial _______ technologies to the analysis, _______, execution and __________ of programs to ________ the ________ behaviour of ________ in order to ________ their personal _________ and that of their ___________."
Words/Phrases to use
improve, marketing, influence, planning, voluntary, evaluation, society, welfare, target audiences
This post itself is homework. We have to create a learning journal and post to it twice a month. The purpose of this journal is to demonstrate what we are learning and record our journey of learning in the course. We must submit this journal to our teacher and we will be marked on it. This post will be my entry for the journal.
By recreating the exercise above it has given me the opportunity to read the definition over and to ingrain it into my brain. I'm pretty sure it will be on the final exam.
I must say here that our instructor Michelle is an excellent teacher and motivator. (I'm not saying this for brownie points Michelle) and she has a great way of engaging the class.
Did I sign up for the right class? Yes I do believe I did.
Did I know there would be homework? Hmmm, what exactly is the definition of homework?
