How prepared are you for a power outage?

I usually an ready for ANYTHING....  BUT not one Friday several months ago.  I was working and still a bit under the weather from a cold or flu or whatever I had.  I called to tell my husband that I had to run a few errands and then I would be home.  It was around 1:00 in the afternoon. He told me the power was out.  UGH!!

It was a little bit misty out and really windy, but there wasn't a storm.  Surely it would not be out long.  Of course I do live in rural Georgia. No electricity means nothing at my house but the wood burning stove/heater.

So I ran my few errands and got home.  Donald had called our EMC and got a recording that said it would be back on at 4:45. Yeah!  So we hoped in the car and went out for an early dinner. (This was our mistake)  Because when we got back home at 6, still no lights and it was almost dark and the fire was almost out.  We went to walk the puppies and came back and realized we'd spend no time planning for long term power outage.  Nothing we usually do was done.

We hunted for candles and matches in the dark... my Donald went out again for drinking water and ice.  I started the fire back as it was getting quite chilly in my house.

At  8:090 still no power.  But we've got candles, a warm cozy fire and are playing cribbage by candle light.  It was after 10 that our lights came back on, thankfully it was before bedtime. I larned a lesson that night about being prepared even when it doesn't look like bad weather.

Usually in the summer I keep a few gallons of "flush" water and if a storm is coming I fill up a few extra buckets in the bath tub and fill the puppies water bottle and the kitties water bottle.  This time it wasn't a storm and I wasn't prepared.  So now I really do have a bad weather "kit".  It sits in a milk crate in the bottom of my pantry.  It has drinking water, flush water, puppy and cat food, snacks, (the puppy, cat and people food I trade out every few weeks to keep it fresh)  batteries ( will trade for new every 6 months) and radio, candles, lighter, flashlight & a deck of cards. It's great that it's all together in one place and I know right where it is.

I feel so much better now that I'm organized for a power outage! I have also prepared one of these kits for the office.  At the office we may or may not have water when the power goes out.  I guess that depends on how wide spread the outage would be.

While I was working on this I had an idea.  Why not make this my new home buyer gift.  I mean everyone could use an emergency kit.  So I've gone out and bought some flashlights, milk crates, batteries, candles, lighters and bottled water and decks of cards and put together a "light" emergency kit for my buyers.  Of course they may want or need to add items if they have pets and children. And yesterday I ordered flashlights with my company name and number on them.

But the fact that I found myself unprepared made me realize that most folks probably don't have one.  And the market I work in is about 50% second homes and who would have one at their second home?  So this is going to be my buyer gift for a while on Lake Sinclair.

Hi Tammy, you are making a good point here.  We usually are somewhat prepared for emergencies during hurricane season but outside of that, I use up the batteries and the water too.  The good thing about living in the South is that at least we won't be freezing during a power outage.

Tammy, great idea as a new buyer gift because as you suspect, most people aren't prepared at all.

Tammy - That is a terrific idea! Especially that alot of people in your area, is their second home and would probably never think to have these things on hand. Yes, you are thinking outside of the box. Love it!!

Tammy, that's a great idea for a gift! I will admit that we are not the least prepared for power outages and usually stumble through the dark looking for a flashlight.  We are so dependent on electricy for our entertainment that when the power goes out we usually just take a nap!

Tammy - That is a really great idea for a gift.  We get power outages out here too but typically in the summer time.  I'm going to give this one some thought because there's a couple different types of emergency kits that can be put together rather inexpensively but yet valuable.  Hmmm...

Terrific idea partner !!!!

I often give a welcome bag with essential like cleaning supplies, toilet paper etc, things they may not have thought about when walking into their new home for the first time, but I love the idea of a survivial kit !

Tammy - When we bought our home in Cary NC the first thing I improved was a whole house generac generator.  It's connected to the gas main and kicks on automatically if the power is off for more than 20 seconds.  It has proved helpful on 3 occasions so far and is money well spent.

I think I'm going to prepare an emergency kit.  I had a dream a few nights ago that I was putting 5 gallons of water in the crawlspace (it's a big crawlspace), and in my dream, my son thought I was crazy (in the dream?!? HA HA HA).  Then I heard that the Pacific NW is in for some El Nino (NOT Greg) weather, and it'll be storm after storm this winter.  We'll see . . . but I'll be prepared!!

Terrific idea Tammy! I love the flashlights with your name on them too; that is very cool!  I remember one time we had invited all of our friends up for an afternoon football party/dinner when the electricity went out.  We had to call everyone and tell them not to come - no electricity to cook the food and no T.V. :-(  That's the day I wished I had a generator in my emergy kit!

Silvia- I don't know, last winter was pretty brutal at my house.

Roger- I don't know many who are prepared.

Andy- a 1992 sudden tornado made me well aware of that fact.  It's good advice to "have a plan"

Donne- some of those rolling brown outs?

Sheldon- I have to say I've never given anyone toliet paper except in their trees (LOL)

Nevin- One of my listings has a system like that.  Sounds like a great idea.

Carla- sounds like that dream might have been a warning.  The Greg Nino comment made me belly lsugh for a while.

Mary- that was a total bummer.  I have borrowed my dad's generator before when we had a outage for a long period, but we really need to buy one... at least for the freezer and refrigerator.  I'd be really crazy if I lost all my food in the freezer.

Tammy, a great gift suggestion for buyers.  We have a generator for our entire house and has really come in handy twice this year, and last year.  One evening after having dinner with some friends and driving home the town was completely dark, as well as our neighborhood...except for our house....lucky us, we would be sitting in the car until the lights came on because the garage door wouldn't open and I left the front door key in the house ;)  Now I always carry my front door key, even though we have the generator.
