Fine Wine in Maine? Yes, Indeed!

When I was a kid my parents experimented with making wine. My involvement with the wine-making process was in the gathering…many summer weekends were spent picking Chokecherries and gathering Dandelion greens, when I would have much preferred doing something fun. These are the only two wines I remember my parents making, although I know they tried many other ingredients. (I distinctly remember wondering why anyone would drink something made out of “choke” cherries, never mind dandelions…have you ever tasted a dandelion???)

Maine is not normally associated with wineries. Historically, grapes have not been hardy enough to grow here where the winters are too cold. Newer, hybrid grapes have been developed recently that will grow here.  There are now 20 wineries in the state.

Using Yankee ingenuity, Maine vintners have become very creative with non-traditional fruits such as blueberries, cranberries, raspberries, apples and pears and surprising things like rhubarb. They are beginning to grow hybrid grapes, and some ship grapes and grape juice in to create traditional wines. Most of the wineries have tasting rooms and will take people on tours. Maine now has the Maine Winery Guild and the Maine Wine Trail to promote the area’s wineries.

While in the Monmouth area, local Maine wines can be purchased in Manchester at Lighthouse Wine and Seafood. Plan a visit Tanguay and Son Winery in Lewiston and sample some local flavors.

Lisa, my grandparents used to make about 100 gallons of wine a year.  I would go with them to the local grocery store to purchase loose grapes, help with the pressing etc.  They had two oak barrels they used each year.  Only one kind of wine was made and it was a dry white table wine called Retsina...yes a Greek wine.

Not too sure about Choke cherries, but I would also help them pick dandelions greens that were cooked...with enough lemon they were actually pretty good...from twelve years old I was allowed a small glass of wine with dinner.  And no...I have no problem with alcohol.

In my Italian neighborhood filled with many of my husbands family roots, they all think they can make wine. It is always potent and strong. And it's funny to see they each brag and say theirs is the best. And like Nick, kids are allowed a little to ward off their future desires to drink.

Nick - I always thought my folks were "different" with the strange wine combinations...glad to hear they weren't the only ones drinking dandelions!  (Just kidding, you know!)  All the children in my family were always allowed a small glass of wine with family dinners, too.  I'm not aware of any one of us who has a drinking problem. :D

Ellen - I can just picture a big Italian family, each side with bragging rights to the "best" wine!  Must be really great!  I'm jealous!  :D

Leesa - I never imagined there were so many wineries, either.  The majority have all sprung up within the past 10 years.  And it would be a fantastic weekend drive!
