Kayaking on the Hudson

Kayaking on the Hudson - Sleepy Hollow NYA lot of my clients and friends have been asking about kayaking on the  Hudson River.   And who can blame them?  The Hudson is an amazing body of water for kayaking – the views – particularly in the early evening are nothing short of spectacular with the sunset views. But it is not for the faint of heart. Proper training is essential because the currents on the Hudson can be quite strong.  Beautiful though it may be – it is not user-friendly.

Well, a  few days ago, I came across a pamphlet a few days ago in Tarrytown  NY about  Hudson River Recreation.

They have been in business since 1998 and offer lessons in kayaking  including kayaking fundamentals and rescue lessons.  They also have supervised kayak rentals and guided  tours. They have programs at Croton-on-Hudson, Sleepy Hollow, and Tarrytown among others.

Hudson River Recreation is a member of the organization called  1% for the Planet through which they have  pledged a portion of sales to support non-profit organizations that have a focus on sustainability.

I’ve seen what I think is this particular group kyaking in Sleepy Hollow.  The picture above is from Sleepy Hollow. I took it last summer at Kingsland Point Park at sunset – later I watched as the kayaks were taken out of the water and stored. It was quite an impressive site.

Ruth Marie - Now first, I did not know there was a need for lessons. I can understand for the average Joe or Jane that does not have automatic skills but it is paddling against the current one side and the next to me.

Also, I can only imagine kayaking on a beautiful evening listening to nothing but the whisk of the kayak against the water, the birds chirping in the background, the fish jumping. Have I missed anything? It sounds loverly.

The Hudson is beautiful. You get an amazing sunset since we are on the eastern side.   But the currents are STRONG... People don't think of the Hudson that way.  But the Long Island sound (on the east side of the county) is far calmer as a general rule.   The Hudson can be very choppy as well.  Swimming accidents are not infrequent.  So you do have to know what you are doing.  I see them out there a lot when I take out my dogs to walk and run in the dog park.

LOL on this.  Can't imagine kayaking in the Hudson.  How about swimming w/ Kramer.  Beautiful views but not the calmest.

Hi Debbie -

YUP!!! I think that you had better be pretty strong and well prepared to handle the currents on the Hudson.  It's not a quiet stream!  People do it - I see them out there.  But its always in groups with a lot of protective gear.  You absolutely have to know what you are doing if you kayak in the Hudson.
