Do it Right Or Don't Bother!

By
Real Estate Agent with One Percent Realty Vancouver Island

I was out with a client today looking at properties in Victoria.  One in particular had obviously been tarted up for sale.  There was new paint, new flooring throughout, new tile surround in the main bath and a few other things.  Looked good for about a minute.

Folks, if you're going to get your property ready for sale and you're going to go to the trouble of doing renos to get it ready, don't do it badly.  You might fool a person or two but it ain't gonna get past my eye.

For example, if you're going to do flooring throughout, think about going into all the closets instead of just ending it an inch past the door.  Or how about removing the trim instead of trying to cut around it and then trying to use some sort of poorly matching filler.  Here's a homes improvement tip, if you don't want to remove door trim you can use a dove tail saw on a piece of the flooring your going to install to cut away enough room for a snug fit.

If you're going to paint, finish the job.  If you're going to tile, try to make sure that you grout all the gaps.  It's not hard, it just takes little time and effort.  Cutting corners on stuff that doesn't cost you any money makes no sense at all.

In this market you either have to be best in class or a terrific deal, or both, to get sold, so pay attention to detail and do the work right!

David,

This is excellent advice. Far too many people cut corners. That's just a waste. Don't bother!

Beautifully said, David! What's the point in doing sloppy cosmetic fixes. In my mind, it just makes you wonder even more what's lurking behind the walls, and under the wall-to-wall!
