AND WE'RE NOT HAVING FUN, WHY?

By
Real Estate Agent with BlueCoast Realty Corporation

Something occurred to me yesterday.  Not really sure why it hit me like a bolt of lightning, but it did.

When did buying a home become so arduous?  When did it become such a chore?  We're not having fun, why?

I remember working with buyers when we had FUN!  We were a TEAM, and we were on a mission!  It was about the search, the hunt -- the thrill of finding THE ONE!

We'd see some duds, and laugh.  Some of the wallpaper I've seen!  Some of the "artwork"?  Oh, boy!  And what was with the one that had the toilet IN the bedroom?  Talk about your home renovation gone bad!

We'd come across a difficult or odd Agent or Seller, and laugh.  The seller that met us at the door in a towel?  Or the one that had more birds than we could count and they ALL talked?  Whew, that was an interesting showing!

I know that the home-buying process is more time and labor intensive than in the past.  And the hoops buyers are having to jump through in the loan process can try the patience of even the saintliest of us.

But why aren't we having FUN?  We're looking for a HOME; a place of respite, a place to make memories and build a life.  These are good things!  Shouldn't the search for this place be FUN?  Shouldn't we be laughing more and griping less?

I'm not sure if it's that Buyers are overwhelmed, or if Agent's are just jaded.  Maybe it's simply a sign of the times.

All I know?  I want it to be fun again.  I want more laughs along the way, and fewer headaches.  I want the Buyers I'm working with to have FUN and remember the search as a good time.  I want to spend my time with Buyers enjoying the hunt and celebrating the victory of finding them THE ONE!

Buying a home is a serious transaction, and it should be treated with respect and professionalism.  But it's not something to dread!  It should be FUN, it should be EXCITING, it should be something to ENJOY, not just to get through.  We, Agents and Buyers, should be whistling while we work, not grousing about it!

Let's get out there and have some FUN!  There are some GREAT buys to be had -- let's find THE ONE for you and your family.  I promise, we'll have FUN along the way, and you'll be smiling when you move into your new home!

Purchasing a home as a primary residence is a fun experience. I agree we should treat it that way. I am sure many obstacles were overcomed to close on the home.

While having fun, we have to be careful about making the first remark about a funky paint job in a home. The buyer may just say they like it.

Tish, We've been lucky lately.  We have had FUN with our buyers and looking.  Most of our buyers have just had us sell their home, so maybe the fact that the relationship is usually already there helps!

Herb ~ Good for you!  That's a great approach!

Bill ~ Isn't that the truth.  I recall having stuck my foot in my mouth more than once, and I can honestly admit, it was NOT tasty!  It is important to have fun in a dignified manner and not get carried away.  You never know what will appeal to a Client, so the key is to "listen first".

Liz & Bill ~ Working with Sellers who then become your Buyers is the best of all worlds, as you've already created a rapport.

Yes Tish, you have put your finger on something great. I would love to have more fun, and for my clients to have more fun with the process. Time to  get back to that thinking (while minding the professional details of course). I liked the seven dwarfs:)

Tish!!!! Thanks for a great start to my day.  While I've not been "in the field showing" for quite a while, I can still relate to this post. Now, perhaps more than ever, a sense of humor is an asset.  No doubt, you've got this area covered!!!!

Now, I've heading to "whistle while I work!"

Tish you nailed it, it should be fun and exciting. The birds reminded me of one of my more unexpected surprises during a showing, 2 huge iguanas that were hanging out in a window with the blinds closed. I pulled back one side of the blinds to check the condition of the windows in the home and froze, the clients at least found it amusing, I was a little surprised that there was not some sort of note in the showing instructions.

Liz ~ That would be a bit of a surprise!  Certainly should have been noted in the showing instructions.

Cara ~ It's such a small world anymore and it's so important to keep our best foot forward, as long as there's a smile attached!  Thanks!

Tish - I'm sure YOU make it fun for your buyers!

I like to tell my buyers we're going to do some real important prep work BEFORE we get started (that's an extensive pre-qualification and buyer needs discussion, along with a good explanation of buyer agency and "how we work together"), and THEN we are going out to look at houses and have some fun and find a house!  By taking the time to get all that stuff out of the way up front before we look at houses, they get the opportunity to see me as someone who knows my stuff, that they can trust, (and hopefully, someone who is working differently than my competition). Then they can relax a bit more in the process and we DO have some fun.

Jim ~ I agree.  I think it's time we got back to that!  Here's to happier days!!

Lisa ~ Have to get Agency taken care of, then do all that tedious paperwork while we're building a rapport and laying some groundwork.  Then, it's off to the races with happy faces!  LOL  Crack myself up sometimes!
