Is Blogging an Income Producing Activity?

Recently I had the following comment on a post that I had written.  The comment did slip an honorable mention of something related to my post, but his overall tone was one of sarcasm.  I really hate when people can't see the benefit of something just because they don't partake in the activity.

Please read below and let me know if I read too much into this.  And answer the question:

Do You Consider Blogging an Income Producing Activity?

"How do you have time to sell real estate and also blog so much? I cant tell you how many times someone has read one of my comment responses and has emailed me the "Jay, you should blog" email. I get that about once a week.  Of course my answer is: I barely have time to read the featured articles and provide a comment, and usually when I do they are days or weeks behind.  There is no way I could write a useful, intelligent, purposeful article/blog on a regular basis. I cant even imagine 30 in 30 days. When do you sell real estate?  I am working with multiple buyers and sellers on a daily basis, and just those tasks alone take up a minimum of 8-10 hours of every day.  When do you do any IPA? Income Producing Activity?"

My short answer to that comment was:  Blogging is IPA.  But the longer answer in my head was something totally different.

What say you? Do You Consider Blogging an Income Producing Activity?

Charita- Excellent post. I haven't blogged long enough to give any empirical evidence. But I think if blogging is scheduled right, it can be very effective. I'm trying to implement a plan similar to Loreena's. If I can keep my blogging to a first thing in the morning or last thing at night, it opens the rest of the day up for business.

Blogging is income producing for me.  I have received good referrals and people contact me all the time with them telling me they read my blog.  Just good for business.

You raise two good points.  Is blogging an income producing activity, and snarky comment of the year.  Nothing about marketing is easy.  Blogging takes a lot of time, and dedication.  8 months of blogging and over 100 posts-- nothing.  But, then I get a call, and it was all worth it.  If Mr. Snark E is so busy that's fine.  But no one needs a blow hard to comment on "how much" time one spends relative to "his" success.

It sounds to me like the person who commented need a lesson in being efficient.  Many of us on here work with multiple clients as well as have an office full of agents.  If you are efficient you can handle everything and have some free time to do what you like.  I don't look at blogging as an income producing event, but I do enjoy commenting on other blogs and writing an occasional one myself.

Charita, I had to smile at the question. I receive clients from Australia, New Zeland, Germany, New York.....I always ask them " so please let me know How did you find me?" the answer is not the Yellow Pages. It is always via Google....

I am a firm believer that if you are blogging either late at night or early in the morning which ever is your comfort level, you would not be talking to a client at that time anyway. It is called time management & discipline and choices we make. So you do not watch some of the Reality Shows because you are busy blogging that is OK because the Reality Shows do not generat Income last time I checked.

Pat "a WHOLE BUNCH" more fun.  Anyone who does not view blogging as prospecting is certainly missing the boat on that.  I'm not saying they have to jump on board, but just take it for what it is:  the new prospecting.  Choose to use it or choose not to.

Tish how many people have dream jobs:  love what they do and have fun with it? Count me in and blogging is a huge part of that.  We'll see on the "featured" thing.

Scott I agree.  I think the vast majority of us are here to generate business so we've got to make time to answer the calls and incorporate other activities into the mix.  With me, mornings (the earlier, the better) are optimal blogging times.  My head is free and clear of the day's clutter.  Choosing the time of day to blog brings out the best in us.  Like so many others, Loreena's game is always on.

Paula that says it in a nutshell.  Blogging is good for business.  In the short time that I've been here, I can't see how it can NOT be good for business.

"Snark E" - Carla I love it.  What I don't get is why Snark E even cares what I'm doing if he is so busy.  Obviously he is doing fine without blogging and I think that's great.  I really do. Let's not even talk about the schematics of marketing.  That's a whole other post.

Simon he did mention working with multiple clients as if he were the only one to accomplish that feat.  In our business time is everything.  We live and breathe by schedules so being a good time manager is an absolute necessity.  Also if blogging is not an IPA for you, then keep blogging and it soon will be.

Case in point Endre:  the proof is in the Juice and you've got "international juice."  And yes choosing peak times to blog means using time that wouldn't be spent with clients anyway. Thanks for highlighting that very important statement.

Everyone markets themselves differently. As for me, I used to hate to lead generate. Now, since I've incorporated blogging into my lead generation tactics, I look forward to this lead generation. My business is up considerably and I'm only spending about an hour a day blogging. It's mostly referrals from other bloggers, but it's business nonetheless. So, YES, blogging is an income producing activity for me.

Craig thanks for weighing in on this.  I've never had a love for lead generation either (particularly cold calling) so I definitely feel you on how blogging has changed all of that. I like that you have "incorporated" blogging into the mix.  Many bloggers, like yourself, rely on blogging for referrals from other agents.  In that regard, it's STILL and IPA.  No one method is foolproof so the use of various methods yields the best results.  We're so glad you're back from vacation.

Charita:  I am still laughing at Carla naming the commenter Mr Snark E.  Way too funny.  Spending his oh so precious time writing a snarky comment seems to be a much worse use of time than blogging which actually does fill your pipeline.  Snarky comments definitely won't do that!

Kathryn leave it to Carla to come up with such a name.  She is hilarious.  I'll admit his time could have been better spent elsewhere.

Charita I got a call just yesterday from one of my blogs.  I've gotten 3 this month from it.  They don't all work out, but SOME do!  The entire purpose of marketing is to get your phone ringing from interested prospects.  So my answer is YES, blogging is an income producing activity.

I think you have to block out some time for it as with all marketing.  :)

Hi Andi thanks for commenting.  It looks like those who have effectively mastered the blogging concept are benefiting from it.  And then you still have those who are in "blog training camp" here at AR.  Some may not think that 3 in one month is a big deal, but it is.  Particularly when you can identify the source.  Good deal for you and in that case, you're excused from blogging as necessary to take care of your clients, customers and those in your pipeline.

Charita, if it didn't bring in business and make my phone ring, I would NOT be doing it. I enjoy writing, always have. I love the AR community and networking here has changed my life.

My team has grown from 4 to 10 since 06 because there is so much business to handle and I am in Michigan. LOL

My clients come first before any blog post.

He must have been having a bad day...don't let it get you down.

Thanks for chiming in Missy.  I hope he was just having a bad day.  A growing team is a sure measure of your success.  With regard to real estate, my days of letting things get me down went away when I discovered ActiveRain.  I spend a lot of time here and like you, if I did not benefit from it in some way, I would not be here.

I saw his reply on a 30 in 30 day post and it was pretty much the same thing.  "Where do you find time to blog everyday?  Here's a challenge - find 30 customers in 30 days"...that kind of thing.

I don't know about the rest of you but I spend maybe 15 minutes doing a blog post if I don't have one waiting in drafts.  I really don't write that much in them...but when I do get on a roll, it'll take maybe 20 minutes.  20 minutes is not my entire day.  What I do know is that my blogging is getting me customers and inquiries.  Because of blogging, I'm being seen and if I have to blog for 45 minutes every day, that's what I'm a-gonna do!! :)

I wanted to get snippy back at him but I decided it wasn't worth it.  Water off a duck's back...:)

Emmary maybe he's spamming everywhere.  Time blocking is a must or else we probably could spend all day on here.  But realistically we have to remember that blogging generates business.   It is not the business.  You time allotments are working for you and that's the main thing.  If they ever need adjusting, then adjust the timing.  Otherwise, stick with what is working for you.

BTW, I really want to get snippy with him too, but I just blow it off.  You rock Newbie.

I am so energized by these wonderful testimonials about blogging-it is positive, uplifting and affirming.  I am glad you shared Jay's email because it produced this fab post but I can easily look at him with a-WOW-that is interesting-I wonder why you are so hostile about this.

With some exception in regards to our team's and company's policies, none of us have to do anything we don't chose to jump into (not that often numerous aspects of whatever we chose to do can be quite stressful, difficult, etc.).  Even here on ActiveRain, we frequently have to block out time when we don't think we have any, push ourselves, stay up later, get up earlier to accomplish our own goals and to answer and support other Rainmakers.  We see or know we will see the benefit if we keep going.

"Stick with what is working for you. . .but just blow it off". I agree with that and look at the support and energy from which all of us have benefited from the excellent question you posed on this post.

That is great Barbara.  I think these testimonies provide us all with something plan for and aspire to (if we plan wisely).  Blogging is a part of a broader plan and as you side, if you chose to blog, you have to make time for it.  People make time for what's important to us and this is no different.  As for Jay, I've already blown him in the wind:).  I can't wait to start reading your succession of AR success stories.  Thanks for commenting and supporting.

Good morning Charita,

I just saw this when it was re-blogged.  I so enjoy reading your stuff - big fan :)  From what you write, to how you write, I get a sense of how you do business and how you treat your clients.  If I had a referral for Birmingham, I'd SO refer that to you.

Mr. Snark E critic just doesn't get it.  If he's got a lead generation avenue that's working, good for him.  If he's got more business than he can handle, good for him.  But I'd bet it's otherwise. Why take the time to leave a negative remark if you're so daggone busy?  My guess is that his attitude would come across in his blogging if he ever did it, and it wouldn't work for him.

Wow, would you look at all the comments for a non-featured post?

Thank you Karen.  I was actually glad that "Mr. Snark E" raised the issue so that I could write about it.  It drew some very interesting perspectives.   I did go to his blog and I think he had a total of 4 post over what I consider a long period of time. What I found were post that rang of a similar critical tone about what someone else was doing wrong or how they were wasting their time.

I got a good response on this and appreciated the feedback.  Can't imagine how much more feedback I would have gotten had it been featured. Thanks again Karen for your kind words.
