The Good Wife... What Will Alicia Do ? Should She Answer Will's Call ? Season Premier Tuesday Sept 28th.

This is Alicia.  Alicia Florrick.

Alicia, at least up until NOW... has been The Good Wife.

Her character... Alicia has been played by Julianna Margulies (of ER fame) in the CBS Series... The Good Wife.

Alicia started out her series by standing at the podium... as we have seen so many wives of so many politicians do... over the last few years.

Alicia's husband, Peter Florrick... played by Chris Noth of Law and Order fame... is a former Chicago state's attorney.  Peter has been jailed following a very public sex and corruption scandal.  During the trial... it was revealed that Peter had numerous extramarital affairs with several prostitutes.

The inspiration for the series, obviously enough, has been the Eliot Spitzer prostitution scandal, and the political sex scandals of John Edwards, Bill Clinton, all the way back to Gary Hart of Colorado during his ill-fated run for the presidency more than twenty years ago.

Alicia, after Peter's being sentenced to a jail term... has gone back to work as an attorney.  After being a stay-at-home Mom with her two children... Zack and Grace for the last twelve and a half years... going back to work was just about the only choice she had.

Also... providing the typical love-twist in the series... is the character of Will Gardner... played by Josh Charles.

Will... is an old friend of Alicia's... from back in his and Alicia's Georgetown Law School days.  Will... is also a partner at the law firm where Alicia has taken a job.

With her faith in her husband Peter's love for her being shattered during her horrible public nightmare... and her having to live with the public humiliation of Peter's affairs with prostitutes... and suffering through his being imprisoned... Alicia and Will... became friends again... and then gradually more.

Alicia has undergone an inner battle with both her conscience and her heart... juggling the constant hurt from the bruises left from Peter's affair... and Peter's promises that he will change his behavior, and then his insistence that those "changes" actually ARE being made.

The Good Wife Series has the luxury of having many very strong characters in the cast.  In addition to those mentioned, there is also Christine Baranski... who plays Diane Lockhart... a senior partner at the law firm.  Baranski does a fabulous job... showing both her hard-headed pragmatic side, and her softer "inner self" in both her dealings with Will... and with Alicia and Peter.

Another cast regular... that of the firm's in-house private investigator Kalinda Sharma... is played by Achie Panjabi.  She has done an excellent job in her role... and, besides Alicia's character... Ms Panjabi has been a strong favorite of mine.  Also... as a result of her strong performance, Archie Panjabi won an Emmy for Best Supporting Actress at the recently held Emmy Awards.

Tomorrow night, Tuesday, September 28th... is the Season Premier of Season Two.  Ten o'clock Eastern, Nine o'clock Central.

As the season ended last year... Peter was at the podium.  Having been released from prison pending a new trial... he was announcing his decision to both fight for his innocence during his upcoming re-trial... and for his re-election as States Attorney General.  Unsaid, but surely four-square in the middle of his mind... was the fight to keep his family... his kids and his wife Alicia.

While Peter was at the podium... the very much conflicted Alicia was in the wings... watching Peter.  Her inner conflict... was very much in the forefront of her mind.  She still obviously has feelings for Peter.  How could she NOT ?  And... maintaining her family... her two children and Peter.  What to do... oh, what to do ?

As she stands there... watching Peter at the podium... her cell phone rings.  She pulls her eyes away from Peter... and glances down at her phone.  It's Will.  Does she answer it ?  A new life, and the lure of a "new romance" with Will... along with the conflicted feelings it brings... or her continued family life... her daughter Grace, her son Zack... and Peter.

Who will she choose ?  We find out tomorrow night !

------------------

You gotta pick one, here.  This is an "audience participation" post, here.  Who will she choose... and Why ?  Also... who do YOU want her to pick... and Why ?

Donna:  In many ways, I don't think she should pick either one, as well.  With Peter... just the "oldie" in me... plus from my own personal experience... I would like Peter and Alicia to at least "try."  But Peter... has to be "true" to it... not just playing it for what he feels it's worth.  But, can he DO that ?  I dunno.

And yes... what Will and Alicia had... and the operative word there is "had"... it appears that Alicia has stayed more on the "real and wholesome" side... while Will is playing every end he can.  Just like the night he and Alicia were going to meet, and Alicia canceled, and Will... mister "true love on his white shiny horse" just picked up his phone and called another chick.  Creep.

Gary:  Just poked your head in, huh ?  I understand.  But... Alicia's character is very well-developed... and adds so much to the show.  She plays it well.

She is going to choose Peter, because that makes a better story. An affair with Will? Maybe, but it will not happen at the start of the season. By the end of the season, Peter will make another horrible mistake OR he will get elected.

Barb:  I have been looking for the DVD's of the first season of the Good Wife, and have not yet found them.  I wondered when they were coming out.  Rodney above in # 12 said they were out... so It is so majorly different to watch a show like this WITHOUT the commercials.  The shows episodes are really only 44 minutes long, with 16 minutes of commercials.  That is 27% commercials.  But... we like the show, so we bear with it.

I love this show, as well.  I follow three a week.  The Good Wife, House, and, strangely enough, the Sci-Fi channel's Stargate Universe.  SGU is much more character-driven that any of its of it's Stargate predecessors.

Colleen:  All I needed was to know that Julianna Margulies was on it... and then I started HOPING that the show would be good enough... to both be a good vehicle for Margulies... and also good enough to stay on the air.

I do NOT want her to answer Will's call.  He is, in my opinion, an opportunist.  He may be "interested" in her... but still, I think he is a "player" at heart.  Still a little boy.  And yes... I at least want her to give it a really good "try" with Peter.  And without Will's interruptions.

Sussie:  I think Will is "a player."  Especially since that night Alicia had to cancel with him, and... he wasn't really all that upset.  All he did it pick out another number on his phone... and called someone else.  Then, he went out with that woman.

Oh... Peter's mother is up to NO good.  They really had been playing her up for a bitchy meddling mother-in-law... and she played it well.  Since the middle of the season, they seemed to have toned her down a bit.

And... I love the kids.  Zack and Grace.  They are very realistic as ... normal kids.  Not impossibly gorgeous.  I especially like Grace.  But both of the kids... they very much love both of their parents.  What Zack came up with... crashing his skateboard into the wall... to trash the ankle-monitor machine... was classic.  It's just a really good show... without any really weak characters.  yes... get out the popcorn.

Liz:  Excellent choices.  Are you sure you're not one of the writers ??  Yeah... if she chooses to stay with Peter and the kids... I cannot think of Will letting it go.  He might back off for awhile... and then just "wait"... until something happens between Alicia and Peter... and then go in for the kill.  As I said before... he is a creep !

And... I do think that... sooner or later... Peter will make another mistake.  Guys like his character much too often... get to the point where they think they are "bullet-proof..." and that nothing can hurt them.  Either that, or that nobody will find out.

Rodney:  Watching it for the first time in the re-runs... may be, in a way, better.  It is all very fresh in your mind.  And watching the DVD's this weekend had to be way cool.

Yes, it's got a great cast.  Christine Baranski is a great actress, and she plays her character Diane Lockhart... very well.  What a great, strong personality.

Kalinda... I liked her right off the bat.  I have some great photos of her if I write another post on the show.  Or... I may just insert another picture... the one I have of Kalinda and Alicia sitting and chatting at a bar.  Great photo, and I just LOVE Kalinda.

And... you got that very right... about her "fierce outfits" she wears.  What a great way to describe them.  I especially like when she wears those "leathery look" jackets.  Yeah... fierce.  Great word !

And yes, Rodney, I do believe she has some "secrets."  I do get the feeling that she "cuts the grass on both sides of the fence"... at least.

Karen Anne - she is an *excellent* actor, with the right combination of emotions. She's also not a "goodie goodie two shoes" - she has an cut throat side. (Case in point - when she told her husband that he had to get rid of the call girl; she did not care how he did it).

She's going back to the husband in order to keep the series tension.

Yes, I'm old enough to remember Chris Noth on Law and Order. PLus, he made a come back and was on the show again for another couple of years recently AFTER Sex and the City.

I think she will pick Peter.  "The Good Wife"  will always choose the husband.  Not the right choice, but it is the one that keeps the audience wanting to see more of her with Will.  We will all find out tonight!!

Ms Karen- thank you for the quick cliff notes ( I haven't been able to watch it every week).  I don't know what she'll do tonight but I guess I'd better set my DVR. !  I kind of hope she picks Chris  Peter, but probably because I still think of him on L&O and Sex and the City.

I just have one bone to pick about The Good Wife. It's supposed to take place in Chicago. I have yet to recognize ANY authentic Chicago scenes in the show. It's probably all Montreal. One of the really neat things about ER is that every Chicago scene was real. They never skimped. Otherwise, TGW is one of my favorite shows! And it's all because of Julianna.

At first I was not even going to watch this show, because I abhor those real life "stand by her man" scenes that we have suffered through with candidate wives of recent years. I did watch (and do and will watch), though because I have grown interested in what makes these strong women decide to do something that I cannot imagine being able to do. If Hillary Clinton had walked, there would be no believability in this story line, at least for me.

Not only is the lead character a strong woman, as others have mentioned, the cast has several strong women. Christine Baranski as Diane Lockhart (and not just because I like the fact that she is named Lockhart) is one of my favorites. The back story of the firm's financial problems and how SHE is dealing with the men around her has been interesting. I want to see more of her and how she got to the place she is and how she continues to live in it.

Karen Anne, I've never watched the series.  You've clearly updated non-watchers like me.  I'll be sure to watch next week's show and will logically comment.  Big, cheat.  Never, it was all in Karrie's imagination.

Karen,

Thank for getting me intrigued.  Now I will have to become a fan too.  I don't watch tv regularly since I never know what day it is let alone what's playing.  Working full time and trying to catch up with kids, homework and all that "other stuff" leave little time for me although I see bits and pieces of the show or announcements never figuring out what the show is about.  Now I will have to tape it so I won't miss an episode.

I was surprised to see so many comments on this topic.  Refreshing.

The DVD for season 1 came about about 2 weeks ago.  I got mine from NetFlix. I didn't expect the new partner to be added to the story so suddenly, although they were searching for one last season.  His investigator is going to be a match for Kalinda now.

I'm hooked on Flashpoint now.  It's a Canadian based show that just finished it's 3rd season on CBS.  The first 2 seasons are on DVD now.

Hi Karen,

Funny - my daughter in Wisconsin was telling me about The Good Wife and that I should be watching it - I never heard of it.

So she googled it to send me the link -

This AR post came up in first position - before the CBS site.  She thought it was hilarious that AR could beat CBS on their own show.  She loved your post, btw.

Virginia:  Yes, I have been watching it since the beginning.  And, kind of chiming in with Ellie in the comment above yours... I just really love the character Kalinda.  She is way cool.  In my next life, I would not mind coming back as Kalinda.  Heck, or even coming back with Kalinda.  <silly grin>

Anyway... that is really cool that MY post beat out CBS.  How cool that your daughter found my post that way.  <impish smile>
