Applebees Park - Home of the Lexington Legends

One thing I know for sure is that I'm not a sports nut.

Even with that said, I didn't turn down an invitation by Richmond Mayor Connie Lawson to join her for a visit to Applebees Park to see the Lexington Legends play the other night. The park built in 2001 has the distinction of being the first totally privately funded Minor League Baseball park in the United States. It can hold up to 6,994 screaming fans!

Sounds like fun...count me IN!!

The first warning as we arrived and were directed to park was that we needed to be aware of the foul balls that popped out of the park to the right.

Parking further away seemed like an excellent idea suddenly!

Since this was my first time at Applebees Park, I was impressed with how helpful and kind the attendants were, the nicely painted building, clean manicured landscape, great food, and wonderful area for kids to play with their families. Everywhere I looked it gave me a welcoming feel.

To watch the Lexington Legends play under the lights at night was magical.  I learned that the park is used 365 days a year for concerts and special events also.

The next one coming up will be on:

Sept.2 and is Fan Appreciation held at 7:05PM. There will be a silent auction, fireworks and free giveaways.

Well ...I can't say that I learned much about baseball that night(I was busy taking pictures, socializing and walking around) but it goes to show you that you don't have to be a baseball fan to enjoy Applebees Park. There's something for everyone here!

P.S. I did worry all night that there was going to be a meteor size dent in my car, even though I had parked further away...

Lizette, It sounds like you had a wonderful time what a nice invitation!  I don't know much about baseball either but went to Shea Stadium not long ago for my first game and had a wonderful time.  Next time park REALLY far so you don't even have to think about that terrific car of yours :)

Lizette--Minor League baseball is fun to watch. They don't seem to take themselves so seriously. The St. Paul Saints play on a field near a train yard and the crowd yells "train" everytime one passes. Their mascot is a pig...You don't need to be a baseball fan to enjoy a minor league game. It is all about fun. BTW they also have the warning signs for cars and foul balls... :)

Sounds like fun Lizette !  The last ballgame I went to was at the skydome in Toronto with a bunch from my office, was fun, however the game was rather boring and I was more interested in the beer vendor (an eccentric old guy who was a riot) who kept going around shouting IIIIIIIIIIIICE COOOOOOOOOOOOLD BEEEEEEEEEEER !!!!   He had every one in the audience shouting with him...including me !

It was a riot and he sold a LOT of beer.

Love the photos!!  There's nothing like a good baseball game OUTSIDE under the LIGHTS!!  The excitement of the fans, hotdogs cooking, sense of loyalty to the TOWN TEAM is all wonderful!!  It's not quite the same atmosphere in the enclosed stadiums...I'm thrilled to hear you had the full experience!

AND - I'm glad to hear you didn't have a dent in your pretty new car...

Jo-Anne, that guy would have made this crowd even more fun!

Susie - There is something magical about being outside for a game. I loved how the second photo showed Mac's view of the game.
