The photo on the left is of my robust life-loving mother, Phyllis Gauger. She is with 3 of my daughters, who affectionately called her "Nana" and was taken Dec. '07. There was nothing she loved more on earth than her family. Nana was 73 years old and had valiantly fought back through 4 bouts with cancer since '96. Breast and Skin in '96, Breast again in '01 and Lung in '02.
The photo on the right is of Nana with me, just 3 months later, with the ultimate vengeance having spread to her bones in '08. This was to be her final go round with the disease that had plagued her, off and on for 12 years. What a difference 90 days had made! She lost 60 lbs, was no longer able to walk and had to depend on her family for everything in her world. This is also just 1 month before she left for her new home in Heaven.
In October 2007, my family and I walked in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Honor of Nana. In October 2008 and each year since, my family and I have walked in Memory of her. I don't think I know anyone whose life has not been touched in some way by this dreaded disease. With all of the progress that has been made in medical science, treatments and prognoses are so much better than they used to be and people are able to live fuller longer lives, but it is not good enough. Not until this demon has been shut up for good can we rest, so for now we must walk to help find a cure.
Please join me in signing up to walk, run or even sleep in for the cure. It can't get any easier than that! Or you could just go to my page and make a donation in Honor or Memory of your own loved one(s). It is so encouraging to see the Survivors out and going forward as best they can, as well as we come alongside those who have lost their mothers, fathers (yes, men can get breast cancer too), sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, neighbors, pastors, teachers, co-workers, etc. to show our solidarity in fighting to eradicate this plague on humanity. Nana is praying you will help, so others will not have to suffer as she did.
This is the link to my Donor Page and I would be ever so grateful for your support. http://www.komenmd.org/faf/donorReg/donorPledge.asp?ievent=343105&lis=0&kntae343105=F71EB73E13CC46328E585B99CB7B01F7&supId=192438597
