Potholes for PovertyPotholes for Poverty

Potholes . . . . we all have them, we all hate them.  We can't repair them ourselves, even though it's our vehicle that gets mud splashed into the undercarriage, and if not careful knock the alignment out of whack (I can't stand when alingments are kinked up).

We drive around them, we drive over them . . . and yet . . .

We can't fix them ourselves.

Enter Potholes for Poverty.  A local business owner,  Ken VanDomelen, came up with the idea.  After reading about potholes which can plague us, combined with the grips from people about how long it takes to remedy them (if at all) -- Ken came up with Potholes for Poverty.

Potholes for Poverty works like this:  Ken's crew will come out FOR FREE and repair a pothole/s in your neighborhood.  FOR FREE!!  All they ask is that you DONATE or VOLUNTEER to a charity.

  • Go to Potholes For Poverty website
  • READ "Do What You Can Do"
  • Complete the application
  • Select the charity you want to donate to -- you can select YOUR OWN "cause" or select from the agencies listed at Potholes for Poverty
  • They will come out and fill in the pothole/s . . .

The option to volunteer 10 hours to a charity is available too.

To read about the Potholes for Property program, please read this news article KATU "covers" Potholes for Poverty  A few of the comments are kinda lame . . . and it's always so nice to read about how "negative" some people feel about a business owner thinking outside the pothole the box.  GEEZ.   And for any negative spew, here's something to think about . . . Ken's idea for Potholes for Poverty combines doing a GREAT COMMUNITY SERVICE for our CITY and for CHARITIES.  If potholes aren't patched, they get bigger, and cost more to repair.  By asking the public to DONATE . . . the citizens are called upon in a way that goes to serve some good!

Ken VanDomelen is the owner of Coast Pavement Services in Tigard, OR.

Charities that are listed on Potholes for Poverty are all worthy:

In a day and age where charities are hurting for donations and volunteers . . .

In a day and age where cities are strapped to the bare bones of their budgets . . .  here's a way to:

"PAVE it forward!!"

POTHOLES FOR POVERTY

(I didn't think of that pun, a newscaster mentioned it, but it's good so I'll use it!)

WOW...What a fabulous Program.  I would love to participate in such a program.  So many organizations are really struggling right now for funds & volunteers.  Great Job Ken & Coast Pavement Services, and kudos to you, Carla, for helping spread the word!

Carla - That is nice to get the word out on something that totally affects everyone. I remember the days when I had a corvette and ran over deep potholes. Lots of expletives ^*&(%$$.

Now there is someone that supports the cause and helps people get involved. I will read the rest of your post later. Bookmarked

Hi Bill & Liz ... there's all kinds of things that can be win-win :-)

Hey Mary Kay -- he does sound like a top drawer type, doesn't he!!

Hi Amy ... I know a few potholes I could donate to, it's one good idea.

Hey Ken -- Yeah, I can imagine with the way the Corvette sits, that would be a problem . . . thanks for your comments, as always!

Carla what a great idea. As an East Coast Transplant many times I had damage to my cars due to potholes...the cities had hotlines to call. This is brilliant idea, serves a multitude of benefits.

Hi Endre . . . oh, and toss a little salt into the wounds :-)  (east coast salts, we sand)  I remember having a tire pop due to a pothole.  It was raining, dark, I didn't see it.  This is a good idea.

Hey Leesa -- I'm sure this concept can be applied to any city/area.
