Monte Sano State Park Huntsville Alabama

In many of my blog posts I mention Monte Sano State Park and it's convenient location to neighborhoods in and around Madison and Huntsville Alabama.  The following features photos of the park and the many things to do there.

Monte Sano in Spanish means "Mountain of Health" and Monte Sano State park is a 2,400 acre park rising 1600 feet above sea level on Monte Sano Mountain.  The park provides 14 miles of hiking & biking trails.  Bird watching is also popular on the mountain.

At the entrance to Monte Sano State Park is the guard booth.  Occasionally there is no one there and the Honor Box collects the minimal fees.  On my weekday visit it cost $2 per person.  The park was built in the late 1930's by the Civilian Conservation Corps established by Franklin D. Roosevelt.  The cabins built for vacationers are still used today.

Below left is the Monte Sano Lodge where you can schedule your special event.  Surrounded in a mountain setting it's the perfect spot for your wedding or business meeting complete with Internet connectivity.  The right photo is the view from behind the lodge.

Playground and an open air amphitheater near the lodge.

Below are stone cabins built in the arts and crafts style that were popular then and today.  2 cabins are dog friendly and there is a $15/dog per night fee.  For rental and reservation information call 256 534-6589.  For those who like to camp, there are improved and primitive camp sites available.

Nick, a great localism blog. I'd love to hike those woods! Fresh air and I bet a few bears to run from.

I love that it's a dog friendly place.  So many camping destinations frown on bringing Fido along!

I love the honor box at the park Nick. That's just something you don't often see anymore. Great job spotlighting this wonderful park in your hometown.

Great scenery, Nick. I think I would bring a cushion for that amphitheatre though :-) Where's the beer tent?

Ellen-no least none that I've heard of.

Beth-wish I could have brought someone along, but everyone seemed busy.

Ed-it is a nice place to get lost for the day.

Laura-there are restrictions on the kind of dog and that it is controlled.

Al & Peggy-thanks guys...there definitely are some nice places to check out here in Alabama.

Craig-yes, I like the honor box too.  There are many farms especially where I'm from in Illinois that have the same set up for people who stop by after hours for a bail of hay, veggies or what ever the farmer is selling...I really like the honesty of it all.  Unfortunately, you know there are those that will abuse it and kill it for the rest of us...but until then...enjoy...and pay your way!!!

George-lots of families visit Monte Sano.

Suzanne-dogs are very much a part of peoples families...and besides I never liked boarding my dogs when I went on V.

John-cushion is definitely advised and you know the way state parks are about alcohol...of course Huntsville and the nearest watering hole are only minutes away.

Debra-I've only seen honor box's in rural areas...farming it.
