When taken in context, it's mind boggling to think that functioning web sites, those with domain names and content have grown from 18,000 in 1995 (as monitored by Rich Miller of Netcraft and reported by CNN) to a current 100 million. Probably even more astounding is the fact that 27 million of those have been created just in 2006. There is no doubt that blog sites account for a large number of the latest entries into what is becoming an incredibly overpopulated universe.
What it means to us is that we're facing enormous rivalry in cyberspace, compelling those of us who earn a living from contacts made there, to be ever vigilant in our quest to be found. Capturing eyeballs becomes a game of one-upping the competition in the hopes that once found, we'll be irresistible enough to hold their attention for longer than it takes to click "next." Most assuredly, and no doubt at lightening speed, will be those at the ready to extract dollars from our pockets to "guarantee" us top placement on the search engines.
