The Tony Award nominated show, 9 to 5: The Musical, hits Atlanta this week after its very well received tour launch in Nashville last week. As the second stop of the National Tour, the show opened last night at the Fox Theatre. Performances will continue until this Sunday.
This brand new musical is based on the 1980 smash movie of the same name. It was the 4th highest grossing film of that year. The musical features music and lyrics by Dolly Parton with the book by Patricia Resnick. The movie was also the basis for Parton's #1 single "9 to 5" which topped Billboard's Hot 100, Hot Country Singles, and Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks charts.
You will find Atlanta's own Diana DeGarmo starring as Doralee Rhodes in the role made famous by Dolly Parton. The Touring company takes to the road exactly one year after the closing of the Broadway production last September. Reports are that some tweaks have been done to make the show more touring friendly. The sit down production on Broadway and at its 2008 Los Angeles world premier at the Center Theatre Group/Ahmanson Theatre both featured sets which would be difficult to take on the road due to venue restrictions.
I caught the show in it's initial LA tryout in September 2008. I saw it again in May of last year when it hit Broadway.
The 9 to 5 Touring cast includes:
Violet Newstead - Dee Hoty (in the Lily Tomlin role)
Doralee Rhodes - Diana DeGarmo (in the Dolly Parton role)
Judy Bearnley - Mamie Parris (in the Jane Fonda role)
Franklin Hart - Joseph Mahowald (in the Dabney Coleman role)
