Time of Use Charges for electricity usage has been in place for different areas in Ontario for a while now, but today, October 1st, 2010 is the day that time of use periods and pricing will apply to residential properties in New Tecumseth.
Our old electric meter was replaced by a new digital electric meter last summer, but until today, it had been playing "dumb" ;-)
As of today, all our meters become "SMART"
Perhaps this is incentive enough for you to start making "better" choices resulting in less energy wastage and keeping more of your hard earned $$$ in your pocket.

Hi Chris - Recently there were some stories in the media that electricity usage did not decrease due to the smart meters.
I think there needs to be more of a differential between off-peak and peak pricing, Marc. The other point I hear often is that the fee for electricity use seems to be the smaller portion of our bill when compared to delivery/debt reduction, HST etc...
Valerie, most newer appliances are both energy star compliant and have timers... Our dishwasher and washer are both about 5 year old and both have timers...
Chris--Don't know where I have been, but I have never heard of a smart meter!!! Sounds like a good idea. I wonder whee the US is with this technology. We all have to do our part. Thanks for bringing it to our attention Chris. Great post!
Pat, A smart meter is not only capable of recording usage but time of usage. The smart meters installed in my area can report this information back to the utility automatically. This allows for a utility to charge different rates for energy usage at different time periods, and even alter the time periods during different times of the year. I'm sure that if not currently in use, you will be seeing something similar in the near future...
