Westchester NY has always been Halloween Central
How could we be anything but? We have Philipsburg Manor and the Headless Horseman Bridge – Sleepy Hollow NY along with Sunnyside – Tarrytown NY – the residence of Washington Irving. Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow NY are at the epicenter of activity at this time of year. And The Historic Hudson Valley makes sure that there are activities galore for young and old to celebrate our unique location and its significance in American History and lore.
Events for October 2010 from Historic Hudson Valley in Westchester begin this weekend.
The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze - Vancortlandt Manor – Croton-on-Hudson
The Blaze features more than 4000 individually hand carved and illuminated jack o’ lanterns. I attended last year – sadly my camera did not cooperate – but suffice it to say – it was nothing short of amazing. They had giant spider webs made of jack o’ lanterns , pirates, ghosts and dinosaurs – all made out of jack o’ lanterns were on display throughout the ground. Be prepared, because it does take some time to take in all there is to see.

TIMES – Half-hour slots 7-9:30 PM on Saturday and 7-9 PM on Sunday Saturday Oct. 2 is almost sold out as of 1 AM Friday.

Horseman’s Hollow - Philipsburg Manor – Sleepy Hollow NY
This is a new haunting experience available at Philipsburg Manor located across from the famous Headless Horseman Bridge. This event will transform Philipsburg Manor – Sleepy Hollow NY into a haunted house inhabited by vampires witches and of course – not-so-dead soldiers. It is rumored that the Headless Horseman himself will make an appearance – although he was unavailable for comment at the time I wrote this post.
This event is recommended for ages 14 and up. The site states that this event is not suitable for small children or claustrophobic adults, people with heart or respiratory conditions or those prone to seizures.. Yikes – obviously its meant to be pretty scary!

Jonathan Kruk’s ‘Legend’ – The Old Dutch Church – Sleepy Hollow NY
Storyteller Jonathan Kruk will appear at The Old Dutch Church (New York’s Oldest church – 1685) to give a rendition of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by candlelight.
The Old Dutch Church has limited seating – so call early

Legend Celebration – Washington Irving’s Sunnyside – Tarrytown NY
A daytime event – all the others are in the evening – for families that have young children. Includes the “Mechanical Man” and “Spooky Story Walks” Legend of Sleepy Hollow shadow puppet shows, magic shows and games. Costumes not only allowed, but encouraged!
Oct 23-24, 30-31 10 AM -4 PM
Reservations required for “spooky story walks.”
