Alabama Labor Day Safety Precautions

Recently there was a new campaign in our area called "Take Back Our Highways."  This campaign was in response to recent statistics stating that Alabama's traffic fatality rate had reached its highest since 1973.  This campaign came out of an effort to make the roads safer.  There will be check points set up around the city:

  • South Memorial Parkway and Martin Road
  • Jordan Lane and Ninth Avenue
  • Church Street and Pratt AvenueLabor Day Traffic
  • Pulaski Pike and Holmes Avenue
  • North Memorial Parkway and Cox Avenue
  • University and Sparkman drives.

Due to the upcoming Labor Day holiday, the efforts will return to areas all over the state.  All available state troopers will join in the effort to make highways safer.  There are some things they will really be watching and attempting to reduce:

  • Speeding
  • Driving Under the Influence
  • Following too Closely
  • Improper Passing
  • Failure to Signal
  • Failure to Yield Right-of-Way
  • Driver Inattention

Labor Day TrafficI would hope that just by knowing that the traffic fatality rate has reached a high would make drivers want to be more careful and cautious on the roads.  However, I think that maybe a movement like this may be what it takes to help make our roads safer.  There were 11 deaths due to traffic accidents during the Labor Day Weekend in 2006.  I hope these safety efforts will reduce that number drastically.  One person is too many to die in a traffic accident.  I want to encourage you all to be careful, cautious, and alert while driving so we can get those rates back down!!
