We can always use great agents!

By
Real Estate Agent with Prudential California Realty

When the market was on fire, a lot of agents came into the business. A lot of agents could cut corners in order to keep business. As the market changes, I have noticed that the most committed and best agents are still around, and the others have gone on to other jobs. In California, there are still a lot of agents taking the licensing exam, so there are still many people who want to work in this field.  I think we can always use excellent agents to join the ranks! I am thrilled when I am working through a transaction with someone who knows what they're doing or wants to learn how to do it correctly and is honest if they need to figure it out.

A few months ago, I sold a house for a client whom I knew from a social internet chat group.  I also helped her buy a home. After the transactions we became friends and I realized that she had the qualities that would make an excellent agent.  I encouraged her to take the licensing exam. She did and just became licensed.  She will probably join my team and I can't be more excited to have her work with me.

What are the qualities of a great agent?  Some of my ideas of what makes a great agent include:

  • Ethical and honest, taking their duties to clients and other agents seriously
  • Patient, in order to take time to actually read the agreements and work through issues that come up
  • Desire to continue to learn and keep up-to-date with the market, legal issues and marketing
  • Friendly and a great sense of humor
  • Commitment and desire to providing clients the best service possible

What are some of the qualities you think make a great agent?

Deborah, I like your list.  I would add willingness for hard work which goes with the commitment that you mention.  Friendly is one that I particular like because it sure makes the transaction fun when you have someone on the other side that you enjoy doing business with and it seems always pick up some gem that you can use in your next transaction.

Deborah, I like your list, but I hope one thing that most people look for in an agent is some actual knowledge about the area they are buying or selling in.

When listing a realtively new home, does the agent know who built it?  Maybe what the name of the model from the builder was?  Are they aware of what was standard vs. an upgrade?

When buying a home, does the agent know where the local schools are located?  Or the nearest Movie Theatre?

So often people work with an agent that is "across town" because they have worked with them before, or were referred to them, and don't take the time to find someone local, with that local knowledge that is truly invaluable.

Not that being an expert negotiator or contract writer isn't a valuable skill, I just want more...far more.

Acting as a TRUE Fuduciary for the client is a VERY IMPORTANT ATTRIBUTE.  Always putting the client's pocketbook above my own.  I have seen that attitude wane in our business in the recent years and it should always be stressed as a key to being a successful agent that also boosts the public's perception of our industry!

Great post and as a new agent I think that this is one of the best times to be entering the business. There is less competition, it makes people get back to the basics, but it also requires that you be creative in your marketing strategies. I'm looking forward to a long and happy career in real estate.

Having Problem solving skills and Determination are 2 more things that make a great agent in my opinion.  Some one may have patience, friendliness, ethics, desire, and commitment however, if they do not have these to attributes, one my throw in the towel and get nothing done.

Thanks for the blog.  I love working with an agent that is honest and hard working.  Willing to go the extra mile always remembering to only expect what you are willing to give

Deborah - great post!  Now is a great time to be entering the business if you are someone who can ignore the media and understand the concept of creating one's "own economy."  You also need to be able to maintain a positive attitude at ALL times.  Many times people from all sides of the transaction use us as a dumping ground for their frustration.  A good agent is able to let that roll off of their back.  Here's to a great 2009!

Deborah, you have made a great statement, as well as all the others who have commented on your post.  Everything everyone has said makes for a great agent, and if we can all strive to be this way, we should all encounter success in real estate.  Here's to the great agents, or at least those that strive to be!

In the era of subprime lending, lots of people decided to "try" real estate. I've seen the ones with true passion sticking around while the testers moved on. I think great agents have passion for the industry.

These are great qualities. We look for that in every agent we interview. The market we have now has "weeded" out the industry. It is very important to  work with someone dedicated and treats this as a career and not a "hobby".
