This is a Public Service Announcement - Yes, it's that time of year, flu season. So, in an effort to remain untouched by this scourge of fall and winter, I thought I'd post some helpful hints.
Before the 'hints,' I want to emphasize one thing: If you have the flu, or think you are getting the flu, STAY AT HOME. I know we all think that we can 'soldier through' our illness, but what you are really doing is exposing the rest of us to your sickness. It's not being tough, it's being selfish.
Here are the 8 Healthy Habits to Practice during Flu Season. Really, it's just common sense.
1. Get vaccinated for the 2010-2011 influenza virus season
2. Wash your hands often!!!! This cannot be emphasized enough, especially for those of us that are in direct contact with the populace as part of our daily routine...i.e. shaking hands, people in our cars, etc.
3. Cover your nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing...but NOT with your hand unless you can wash that hand immediately!
4. Discard used tissues (Do people REALLY need to be reminded to do this!?!?!)
5. If a tissue is not available, cough or sneeze into your elbow crease....this is a relatively new concept I know...see number 3.
6. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth...this is how the virus can enter your body.
7. Avoid close contact with sick people.
8. And finally, STAY HOME if you are ill. If you have flu-like symptoms, stay home until you are fever-free for 24 hours, without the use of fever-reducing medications.
Thank you to the Ocean County Health Department for reminding me of these "Healthy Habits" in their latest mailer.
