Gainesville & Haymarket Commuters Beware: Route 55's Exit Off of Route 29 is CLOSED

I live directly off Route 55 in Gainesville.  For years I've been taking the right hand exit from Route 29 South to get on Route 55.

NO MORE.

This Route 55 exit is permanently closed.  You can read VDOT's release on the matter here.

For commuters from Route 66 that want another way to get to Route 55, I suggest taking the first exit to Route 29 North in Gainesville.  Stay straight instead of turning right. This puts you on Heathcote Blvd. and will take you to Catharpin Rd. where you will be able to turn left and connect to Route 55.

Now I've got to retrain my brain to do this.  Old habits die hard.

This would be tough to get used to.  It'll take a few weeks for it to sink in, but in the end, you'll not notice a loss of time of anything.  Heathcote to Catharpin is a quick route and how I already get to your house.

I've been making that right hand turn onto 55 for more years than I want to admit.  When I went to college in the Shenandoah Valley 66 ended at Gainseville.  I then would head down 55 to 81.  Loved the drive in my little VW.
