I'M CALLING MY OWN SHOTS! Plus a Few Others that the AR Gods Missed this Week - #11

By

I love surfing in the rain!  I love hanging out with my subscribers and supporting their blogs but most of all, I love finding newbies who are writing some really good posts.

These are actually some of my fave bloggers right now.  There are so many newbies here who are working really hard to build some great blogs and I love coming across their good posts and supporting their efforts.  This week was no different.

First and foremost, I want to give a big shout out to Cynthia Larson for her post The Chicken and the Egg of Real Estate that was awarded with that highly coveted gold star feature and I was happy to "call the shot" on her.  I really liked this post because not only does Cynthia educate prospective buyers about getting pre-approved before looking for properties but this post developed such a really interesting comment thread that it actually inspired me to write my own post as kind of a follow-up (sort of).  Stay tuned for that a little later.

There are a couple of other bloggers and their posts that the AR Gods must have missed this week when they were bestowing those little gold stars.

First there was Tom Bashe with Do you find yourself making your 10+ comments a day solely on featured listings?, where Tom questions the practices he witnessed by some bloggers at the most recent rain camp.  Tom illustrates the exact type of practice that is so rampant here and exactly why I rarely ever read the feature board anymore.

It's because of this exact practice that I started doing my own posts highlighting bloggers who don't make it to the feature board and not because they aren't good writers either.  Tom is new blogger that I just recently started following and he's doing really well in building a good blog.  Check him out.

Next was Ken Barker with When Is The Right Time To Kick It Up A Notch To Join The SEO Bandwagon?? with a really good question about where to go with all his new found education and opportunities.  I liked this post because Ken asks the question that so many newbies wonder about.  This is when it's really important for all those Ambassadors out there to step up to the plate and help out these newbies with their valid concerns and questions.  Ken is also a relatively new blogger who is putting together a really great blog.  Check him out.

Then there was Greg Nino with his latest rant, Frustrations With Active Rain... Am I the Only one???.  I liked this post because like Greg, I too am really frustrated with AR's !#$% search engine.  Quite frankly, IT SUCKS!!!  AR needs to do something about this because it hasn't been working for a long time and it needs to be fixed.

Lastly, along the same lines as Greg's post, there was Two bugs to explain vanishing ActiveRain points by Russel Ray.  Russel informs us of some AR bugs that will wreak havoc on your points.  While these bugs wouldn't stop me from making necessary changes to my older posts, I can certainly see where these bugs would cause some problems in certain circumstances.  Check it out and be informed of what to expect if you need to make some changes to any of your older posts.

As always, I love "calling the shots".  I'm pretty picky and selective about whom I suggest.  I intentionally highlight my fave bloggers and then I look for new bloggers or bloggers that aren't on the feature board every other day.  Anyone can suggest all the popular bloggers but finding the hidden treasures and gems is so much better.  I hope you check them out and enjoy them as much as I did.

Donne I just checked them all out.  I had already read Ssssssynthia's post (chicken/egg) but the others were great reads as well and I provided my comments on their post. Thanks for calling your own shots.

Very good points.  I'm starting to be a little turned off by the featured page as well, since the same faces are there almost every day, and often the topics are just different perspectives on the same material.  I've wondered why some of the newer bloggers or at least DIFFERENT bloggers aren't featured more often.  I guess I need to better understand "calling the shots."  Thanks for pointing out some good bloggers.

You're providing a valuable service here. I'm curious, would you be offended if I did something similar? I think ActiveRain would benefit from a BUNCH of us making our own round-ups of what we consider the best of the past week, especially since we'd all have different lists...but I wouldn't want you to think I was just "stealing your thunder" to get a featured post of my own. If anyone else has a comment on how that would appear, I'm all ears.

Donne,

Thanks for sharing.  I've missed a few of these posts and am going to go back and read them now especially Greg's and Russell's.

Here's a SHOUT OUT TO YOU for CALLING YOUR OWN SHOTS!!!!!

Donne:  Thanks for your selections. I remember long ago Russell talking about those points mysteriously disappearing.  Still hasn't been fixed I guess which is a shame.

You know today on the Featured Roll there is a newbie that wrote all about points & what they stand for.  That's all well & good but should it be FEATURED?  NO.  It's stupid, redundant, childish.  He didn't even call it something funny like a 'Point Tutorial' step right up.  I was going to leave a nasty comment only I thought it's not the guys fault he got featured for drivel.

Okay Donne- you have GOT to make you links open in a new window.  I had to come back lots of times after checking out your list. :)

Another great one.

Endre - I can't even begin to imagine what it takes to run this site.  I'm sure there are probably even more bugs that we don't even know about.  However, the two issues I mentioned have been issues for a long time and they probably should be working on fixing them.  As for editing posts and losing points, I would rather have an accurate and well done post than a few extra points.  For a newbie, I can see where this would be a dilemma but for me, it's a no-brainer.  A good blog is more important to me.

Debbie - Thx for the support; I really appreciate it.  Features are so rare for me and I never realize I have one until someone tells me (since I rarely read the feature board anymore).  I guess I'm just not used to them and that's probably not a bad thing either

JP - I would really love to see the search engine improved.  When I first started two years ago, the search engine was great and it worked fine (I suppose).  I really don't understand why they changed it.  The new one is terrible and not user-friendly.

Thx for stopping by folks; I really appreciate it.  Have a great week everyone.  :)

Charita - I'm glad you liked the post. I enjoy highlighting my fave bloggers as well as introducing some really good newbie bloggers.

Kate - The whole purpose of the "calling the shots" program was to hopefully introduce some new blood to the feature page.  Unfortunately, it hasn't really worked out that way and we are still seeing the same old faces day after day after day after......

This is why I started my called shot posts; to introduce some really good newbie bloggers as well as highlight some of my fave bloggers who aren't on the feature board every other day like some others.

Robert & Leslie - I'm glad you liked the post.

Thx for stopping by everyone; I really appreciate it.  Have a good day and a wonderful week everyone.  :)

Bob - Greg is quite possibly funniest guy on AR.  He also is infamous for addressing anything and everything regardless of what others think about it.  I like that about him and, of course, his humor.

Chris - It is really hard to catch all the good stuff around here.  There are just so many good bloggers here.  My best advice: go beyond the feature board.  The best stuff actually never makes it to the feature board.

Mindy - NO OFFENSE AT ALL!!!  I think you should do your own post!  There is another member here that does this too and while it's also a good highlight of what she thinks are the best, she and I definitely have two completely different perspectives of what we think a good post is.  That's one of the best things about being a part of the rain community here - WE HAVE OUR OWN OPINIONS, EXPERIENCES, OBSERVATIONS AND IDEAS!  Blog on Mindy!  I look forward to seeing it.  :)

Thx for stopping by everyone; I really appreciate it and I'm glad everyone likes the post.  Have a good week everyone.  :)

Gina - Thx for the support; I really appreciate it.  I just try and do my best to highlight some really good newbie bloggers as well as some of my fave bloggers who aren't on the feature board every week.  God know the feature board could sure use some new faces every now and then.

Lyn - LMAO!!!  I couldn't agree with you more about some of the drivel that gets featured, which is exactly why I rarely read the feature board anymore, unless I notice a new called shot and then I go and see who it was.  Other than that, I don't read the feature board but I can't help but notice that on the AR drip emails, I often see the same people over and over and I hear from others too that the same people get featured over and over and over and......

Tammy - Duly noted and fixed.  I don't know why that happens to me (this is not the first time).  When I create my post and insert my links, I always do format them to open to new windows and I even double-check them after I post and somehow they still occasionally get messed up.  I guess it's another AR bug.  LOL  From now one, I'm going to need to triple-check my links.

Jill - No one has time to read all the good stuff being posted to this site everyday.  LOL  I just try and highlight the few I come across during my weekly surfing.  :)

Thx for stopping by everyone; I really appreciate all the support.  Have a great week everyone.  :)

Thanks for this post,  there were quite a few of the posts I had not read and found very interesting.  Funny how we all tend to go to the same types of posts all the time.  I like people's summaries for that reason, it takes me to people I don't normally follow.  Thanks.

Donne, you found some great EXTRA posts for all of us. Thanks much. I just want Proxy Errors and Bad Gateways to go away, and a decent editor inside Active Rain. It is ALL I have ever wanted for Christmas the whole time here and I have NEVER got it. Hope springs eternal....

Ritchie - In my opinion, there are way too many great posts to read every one of them.  I just try and highlight a few that I come across.  I'm glad you liked the post.

Lesley - Most of the posts that I read these days are my subscriber blogs.  If I have time (I have to manage the amount of time I spend here), I will check out the Professional blog roll and the general blog roll for newbies with good posts.  For me, supporting my subscribers and newbies is more important to me than commenting and featuring all the popular kids.

Gary - I'm glad you like the post. In a perfect world, everything would work perfectly everyday. LMAO!!!

Thx for stopping by folks; I really appreciate it.  Have a great week.  :)
