A Foreclosure, A Felony & A Perception

By
Real Estate Agent with Palm Properties FL# SL3323876

"A Foreclosure and A Felony" is a true story about how a foreclosure turned a couple's life into a felony charge.  Sad story and there are a LOT of them across our country.  While I don't condone what the San Diego police officer and his real estate agent wife allegedly did, the reader responses on the local news' website were almost as disturbing as the story.

Are we responsible?  Is that the perception?

Susan, I read your other post on this and I agree this is a sad situation BUT these homeowners, in addition to taking a sledge hammer to the facade. Stripped out all the appliances and then offered to sell them back to the bank. Most of the stolen items were found in storage units owned by the couple.

They also demanded $10k cash for keys (according to the paper). Not sure they were clear on the concept though.

The public's perception of this problem is very distorted and you're going to get mindless comments like the second guest above.

Susan, I understand the frustration, but I agree with Greg's comments!  And for Guest's comment, that is just stupid, if you're an adult, you have the right to ask any question about anything that you do not understand.  In many cases it is unfortunate, but blaming someone by saying that the "average Joe" didn't know what he was doing is demeaning to everyone, especially the "average Joe"!

Thank you for your comment Greg and the additional information.  I know that Riverside County has been particularly hit hard by foreclosures.

Tony & Darcy, I agree with Greg also and while I understand the frustration and I am sure other homeowners might fantasize about doing what this couple did, I also think that most out of respect for the families and neighbors, don't act out on it.  Good point also about the "average Joe" comment!   ~ Susan

Hi Susan!  Both posts just make my blood boil!  I have seen this very form of damage that is totally unnecessary.  On the other hand, doing everything that they possibly could for the bank and then facing a foreclosure anyway, also unnecessary.  As for the second comment--I guess they're ticked with Clinton too, who is the one in 1992 that proclaimed that homeownership is for everyone and that we need to 'make it happen' for all Americans!

And, last I considered the term, "average Joe," it was under the assumption that average means average!  Can't average folks make an educated decision or ask a question if they don't understand what is before them (as in mortgage documents)?  UGH!

Thanks for waking me up this evening!  LOL

Susan,

I also agree that taking frustrations on a house is very unnecessary.  I wished people could be more civilized, have more common sense and try to get back on their feet after unfortunate situations by being responsible adults and do their best to build their lives again and not destroy or go on a destruction rampage to express their frustrations.
