Tranforming your appliances for under $100

Placing "stainless steel viynl film" on refrigerator and dishwasher.  My experience with this product is that I would only recommend using it on the dishwasher panel.  I was easy to remove the panel and roll out the film on a flat surface.  Just need to be careful about not having any air bubbles when placing the film.  It looked great and it was almost impossible to tell that it was a film on the panel.  The refrigerator was another story... The film buckled around the handle and around corners.  The film is only sold in 36" sheets so there was a seam on the front.  Not pretty!  I don't recommend it for refrigerators.  Of course, you can't use a plastic film on stoves.

  1. Painting stove, refrigerator and dishwaser with "stainless steel paint".  I used Thomson' stainless steel Paint.  It has stainless steel particles in the paint so you can actually put magnets on the refrigerator. (Not that stagers would recommend putting magnets on refrigerators).  I purchased a kit from a local paint store but if you can't find it, you can order it online at www.liquidstainlesssteel.com for about $100.   I painted the refrigerator, stove and dishwasher and LOVED the transformation.  With the kit include a video that has step-by-step instructions. The only caution is that this is a several day project since there is waiting time between coats of paint.

Thank you, Deb. This is a great idea to give a kitchen with mismatched appliances a facelift.

Even with the photos from the website mentioned, it's hard to if the look is really like stainless steel or not.  Still, it's an interesting (and far cheaper) idea.  Curious, how is the paint at handling heat, since many ovens were shown in the photos on the site.

Like Roger, I am curious if the paint looks like stainless steel in person.  The picutres do look good.

Answer to the question of whether the painted appliances look good in person.  My opinion is that it look great-- if you take your time painting it.  You'll need to paint on several thin layers and watch out for drip marks.  Drip marks would be a dead give away!! If the appliance has a texture, the texture does show.  I primed the refrigerator with Zissner primer to attempt to remove the texture.  It reduced the texture but it was still visible.   Of course, we don't want to deceive our buyers so my Realtor did not advertise the appliances as stainless steel.  We simply let the pictures do the talking.

As far as the heat tolerance for the stove.  The paint will bronze around the burners due to the high heat.  I painted the top of the stove around the burners with a black high tolerant heat paint. It worked fine.

Deb - thanks for this info...almost as inexpensive as simply removing all the "fridge art" that adorn everyone's appliances!  Julie

You have more patience than I Deb! Your transformations photograph beautifully I don't know if I'd be as brave as you to venture to try but it's a great resource, thanks for sharing all the ins, outs, ups and downs in the process too!

Very cool idea, and great to hear from someone who has tried it.  I definately would want to make sure they were not advertised as Stainless, so as not to give anyone the impression of staging as "Smoke and Mirrors", as I have seen a realtor post that once after a stager's blog.  Thanks for sharing!

I've seen one painted before but they painted it white.  It actually looked pretty good.  A good recommendation for sellers, it looks good in the photos.
