Wordpress.com vs. Wordpress.org

Which One is the Way to Go?

I am looking to start a blog besides this one here on activerain.  Everyone seems to suggest wordpress to me.  I have learned that there are 2 different wordpress blogs.  Those from wordpress.com and those from wordpress.org.  What I have learned so far is that wordpress.com blogs are completely free because they are hosted by the company.  Wordpress.org blogs do cost a little because you need to host it yoursself.  Besides that piece of information, I don't know a lot about either.  I am looking to do this fairly soon, but am trying to do my homework first.  Don't know which wordpress blog is the way to go.  I want to be able to get some google traffic from it eventually. I also would like to be able to design it to look similar to my current website, www.muldowneyteam.com so that they look like the same site. Kind of continue the branding.

If anyone has any suggestions or whether to choice wordpress.com or wordpress.org or if anyone can give me some clarification about the difference between the two, that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

To me, Wordpress.org is the only way to go. The hosting fee is minute, compared to the potential you could gain.

Also, know that not all Wordpress themes are the same. Go with the Thesis theme. The Google strength is strong. Mine gets indexed within 1-2 hours. You wont go wrong with Wordpress.org.

If you have a WP.com site, it's like a blogger, blogspot, Realtor.com, Trulia, Zillow type blog. If it disappears tomorrow, you are bye, bye. That's why I have my hosted WP blogs.

Jennifer ~ Thanks for the post because I was wondering the same. Just visited WP.com the other night and wasn't sure what the difference was. I will follow Loreena's lead and check out .org this evening.

Loreena is absolutely right. There is much greater functionality on a self-hosted wordpress blog as well. You'll never be able to do the things you can do with a self-hosted blog on wordpress.com. You can get a domain for $10/yr and hosting for $4/mo from BlueHost. Well worth the money. If you are already handling the hosting on your website you may also be able to piggy back on that hosting account with no additional charges.

There is a wordpress blog group here on ActiveRain and one of the members is posting a series on how to DIY a self hosted blog.
