Somehow, I missed the blogging boat! I’m not sure how and it probably doesn’t matter now, but clearly, the ship sailed as I stood at the dock waving goodbye.
I do recall hearing of blogging, perhaps as far as a few years back. My initial thoughts said, “That’s stupid! What could a real estate agent possibly have to say, on a long term basis which would be interesting enough to engage people in any meaningful way? Sounds like a big waste of time to me.” With that, I put it out of my mind, and since that time it has only occasionally found its way back, and only for brief moments at a time.
It’s not like I’ve ever really been out of touch with technology. Throughout my 14 years as a Saskatoon real estate agent I’ve been what most would call an “early-adopter.” I clearly recall in 1993 when I was newly licensed, some speaker who’s name eludes me preaching, “You’ve got to get computerized now. You’ve got to embrace technology. Those that don’t will be gone in five years.” I didn’t want to be gone. I had just arrived.
So off I went to the computer store and I returned home with my new Compaq Presario complete with 256 Megs of RAM. From there it’s a bit of a blur, but many cool tools followed, all in good time. From Internet dial-up to wireless mobile, and hundreds of things in between I’ve stood at the front of the line eager to grab anything that would move me forward. I tried all of the hardware and dozens of software upgrades passed through my computer. Yet somehow, I missed out on blogs.
Just last week, I was reading the November issue of REM magazine, a publication of the Canadian Real Estate Association. I came across an article titled, “To Blog or Not to Blog” and a prominent blogger was quoted as saying, “The real estate industry as a whole is making the plunge into the Web 2.0 phenomenon.” Like a ton of bricks it hit me. “The real estate industry as a whole” had upgraded to the latest version and I was still using the old stuff. They were “plunging” and I hadn’t even gotten my toes wet. So here I am. Perhaps up to my knees. It feels strangely like I’m up to my neck but I’ll learn, with your help.
Mean time, could somebody please poke me when they release version 3.0?
