Broker Agent Magazine -- Scam or Good Marketing?

Real Estate Agent with Lyon Real Estate BRE #00697006

I'm tempted to say scam. I was notified by Broker Agent Magazine tonight that I was referred to them and nominated as an agent of the month. I've always thought this publication was something that agents bought, so I immediately asked what was expected of me, financially. The reply was they wanted to meet with me next week to discuss reprints.

So, I asked upfront about the cost of reprints.

This is what I was told:

Four page    $3495 for 1000 reprints on 80lb text plus you can buy additional reprints at a cost of $450 per thousand.
Six page     (tri fold)   $4995 for 1000 reprints on 80lb text and additional reprints are $450 per thousand
Eight page    $5995 for 1000 reprints on 80lb text and additional reprints are $450 per thousand.

If I handed out four-page reprints per year to 50 clients, it would take me 20 years to hand out 1,000.

Now, I might pay $3.00 per reprint on a lesser quantity, but something tells me that Broker Agent Magazine is going to select another "respected" nominee when I offer this negotiation.

I guess there are a lot of agents desperate for exposure who will pay $6,000 for the "privilege" of being named Agent of the Month -- oh, give me a freakin' break, why doncha.

Congratulations!  You are my Agent of the Year.

I will be happy to leave comments on each of your posts saying so for a paltry $400 per 100 comments.  Please forward me your credit card information immediately so that I don't have to find another Agent of the Year to grace.

If you buy into it and they delivered what they promised you, it's not a scam.  Believing that you're getting value is another matter.

It smells of scam. I would have to give them the benefit of the doubt. Anyway, I wouldn't do it.

I have to agree with Yolanda -- this is not a scam it is a legit marketing opportunity. However, i would agree that this is NOT the best way for many agents to spend their marketing money.

Is it a scam? no.

Would I do it? no.

Run, run fast and don't look back.  There are people standing in line to take our money, these are a part of that group.

Thanks for everybody's comments. I'm guessing that Broker Agent goes through the Master's Club list from MLS to select its participants, figuring that those agents have the dough. They wouldn't have much success, I suppose, with the agents who can't afford to pay for advertising.

What rubs me the wrong way about this outfit is the hook -- it's not honest. It would be one thing if the publisher said, "Look, we'll put you on the cover and give you X number of reprints as long as you pay us X number of dollars." That's straight forward. That's honest.

But to bundle the opportunity under the disguise of a respected third party endorsement is dishonest. That's what I don't like about Comstock's, as well. Advertising publications that parade as journalism give the entire industry a bad name.

As Yolanda said, if you go into this with your eyes wide open, that's one thing, but think about how many agents who fall victim to this marketing ploy.

I don't know, April. When they contacted me, they wanted me to buy 1000 print copies and mail them, pretending that I was on the cover of a magazine and send them to my clients / prospecting list. It seemed sleazy to me.
