When I first started working at Redfin I believed that all you needed to do was open up the MLS information to consumers on the web and they'd be able to quickly and easily find their own homes online. And I still believe that open access to information about listings, the market, and the agents in that market is absolutely critical to build a liquid real estate marketplace based on trust.
However I've heard enough stories now where the internet came up short in helping a home-buyer find the home they bought that I've modified my tune slightly. Sometimes it is because the listing agent had entered the listing in a way that it escaped the user's search criteria (c'mon listing agents, do your sellers justice and get the facts straight in the MLS! You know who you are...) or where the client simply hadn't realized yet what other properties might be suitable for them.
In these cases, the agent using their keen knowledge of inventory on the market, and their active listening skills, has matched the property the client ended up buying.
