Are your Profile, Blog, and Comments helping you or hurting you.........

How many times have you bought something on  e-bay, or anywhere else on the Internet, but once you received it you were disappointed - it wasn't really what you thought it was.  Maybe the picture showed it larger.  Or the description embellished the attributes, maybe there wasn't a picture at all, just the items description. For whatever reason you aren't happy.

Our Presence here, on Active Rain, does the same thing : Look at the 2 Packages below.  Which one do you like the best, and why? What if there was a card telling you what was inside......would that make a difference?

         simpleFancy gift

What  happens when we hire people only from the Package.....you know you've seen the ads.......We're #1, We have the Best Marketing, We're #1 , #1, #1, #1......  Exactly how many number 1's are out there? Surely not everyone is the best.

But how do you know?  Take the plain gift above......it is a little smaller, appears to be a gold  colored box, with a simple bow.  The other is brightly colored, somewhat bigger, and the tab is only partially sealed....what could be in it?

We let our minds think of everything we want, or think is inside, and make a choice.  Maybe we like Gold, maybe we like purple, or maybe we just think Bigger is better.  For whatever reason we WILL make a choice.

Now think of your Active Rain Profile, your Blogging History, the comments you leave on others Posts, oh, yes and the points......What type of Gift are you to this community?  Is your gift something we want to send back, or something that we are pleased we bought....

A few posts lately have shown that some nicely wrapped packages have "a Hornets Nest inside", once opened they buzz around stirring up trouble, just to have their own hive bigger and better.  But which package did it come from?

Then there are the packages that don't get opened, and they are so full of treasures...diamonds, emeralds, chocolates, cashmere, new putter, new technology tool, whatever we as individuals value at the time we open it.  But which package is it?

A few tips that might help you  pick the right package:

-Go to different Groups, see who is commenting, what they are writing......What is the Group about

-Go to the Newbies Profiles, their Blog if they have one, and welcome them.  As they feel more welcome we all might get some of treasures they have hidden inside.  Remember though all of us make mistakes, and if you see they did something against a rule, tell them, gently, but don't sting them.......their present might be the one you have been waiting for.

-If you don't like a particular Bloggers views, just fly on by.......we don't have to leave rude comments, or mess with their points (some people really work hard for them), and we don't have to like everyone, but we do have to be respectful.

-Look past the Profile......It might  just be " Window Dressing", or even have a curtain over it waiting to be revealed - see who others are recommending, who has given us their special gifts, and have made Active Rain what it is today.....a great place for sharing, networking, and getting business.

Active Rain Gifts

Inside one of these Packages will be a Gift more valuable than you ever thought possible......and it was given to you .......just for being a member of Active Rain.

A true gift is given without any expectation of receiving one in return...Make your gift to the community something others value, and remember we never know what package someone else's gift might be in........

Five stars, five stars!  I love the "if you don't like the blogger, fly by".  Skip the comments and move on.  I am not sure what my packaging looks like.   As is true with physical appearance, as well as our internet appearance- it doesn't matter what the packaging looks like if the box is empty inside.

I often find new blogging "treasures" by the comments they post on others blogs- comments count!

Ginger,

Thank you for taking the time to comment......and not just "fly by."  I wish I could say I like everyone on AR, but that would be dishonest.  As you said the comments tell you so much about that person, and I go to the ones I like, and stay away from the ones I don't.

There are so many trued "treasures' and ones that I never expected.  I feel blessed in what I have received here, and all for free..........we all are blessed, if we chose to be :)

I really enjoyed this post, Kathy....a 5 er.  My Mother always said 'beauty is only skin deep' and 'never judge a book by it's cover'.....

true gems are hard to find, although there are plenty that shine on the surface...

thanks for making me think of these thing tonight...while I have my little break here.

Jo-Anne,

Thanks for those words, I just clicked post on something very very similar.....not judging a book by it's cover. :)

Debbie & Rick-

:) :)  I totally understand......welcome to AR......and seems like you are doing the right thing, search around, read what interests you, and have fun....Careful with that right  hand though, don't want it to wear out before you really get involved here. :) :)

Kathy, this is an excellent post!  I enjoyed reading it because it is so true.  Even offline, you don't know what you are going to get with someone until you really get to know them.  There are people out there who put out the "political/nice person" front and when you really get to know this person who is a seemingly white-collared, church going "nice guy" you find what you might call the Hornet's nest and a lot of "questionable" behaviors.  It is so confusing and disappointing because of the "pretty package."   No one is perfect, we all have flaws. Just remember you can't judge a book by it's cover.

Lacey-

Amen to that...you just never know.  And you're right, it can be quite disappointing, in the "real world" or here on AR, people aren't always as they seem to be.......I'm OK with that mostly, until the "Hornets Nest" comes out, then my own hive gets stirred up:) :)  I might get stung once, but usually not twice.....

Kathy - I really liked this post.  I can tell that you put a lot of thought into your writing, and I appreciate that.  I must admit I am wondering about where the "Hornet's Nests" are, but I guess I will figure that out for myself.  Thanks for the sentiments here.

Jason-

Thanks for your comments, and yes, everyone has their own version of the "hornets nests" some are just more obvious than others. Personally I prefer to ignore them, when we give attention to negetivity it grows.

A swarm of "hornets" stings worse than a single one......

Looking  for the treasures is a much better use of time and energy :)  Many newer members here are a true joy....

Hi Kathy! Great post. Its the nice people who like helping others that encouraged me to stay on AR and open up. I try to be the same thing for anyone I come in contact with here. :) The grumpy people can just keep their negativity to themselves. :)

Hi Kathy,

You're absolutely right! I think it is most important to try and right "good" material instead of just anything that will get you some points. After awhile I think the others on this network get wise to those type of posters and don't bother reading their posts. Also, if one comes across as being less than professional that could hurt their public image.

Keith,

Yes, in the time I have been here, I have only written 1 "silly" little post......mostly I try to write something someone might want to read.  And yes, we can definitely hurt our image by being unprofessional.
