The Hamptons in the Fall!...Nothing quite like it!FALL IN THE HAMPTONS

Those of us who live here, in the Hamptons, year round are the luckiest of all!!! We get to be here during the most beautiful and delicious time of year: Harvest Season.

September and October is when the crowds are gone, the weather is perfect, the colors take on a vastly different hue and the time to pick pumpkins has arrived!

On the way to Bridgehampton from Southampton is Water Mill.  Every Fall, Pumpkin farms, located along the stretch of Route 27 open up to the public and create an environment that children never forget! Hundreds of cars park along the highway and the children are allowed to run free within the wire fencing that surrounds the grounds.  The fields are overflowing with Pumpkins and wooden castles, trains, old pirate ships and giant slides. In other words the 5 acre farm is transformed into a wonderland that families can enjoy through the whole month of October......

PUMKIN PICKING TIME!

BRING THE WHOLE FAMILY TO THE HAMPTONS IN THE FALL; MAKE A DAY TRIP IF YOU ARE CLOSE ENOUGH! Come for the weekend too---there are accommodations nearby that welcome young families; the more the merrier!!!

When you have selected your pumpkin and packed it securely away in the trunk, take a drive North to the farm fields and farm stands that offer the fruits from the end of summer..you can find fresh ear-corn, cabbages, gourds, and tomatoes; califlour, beets, carrots and green, leafy lettuce....and just down the road from the Pumpkin Field is an apple orchard--another place to visit to buy apples, pies, cider, honey and maple sugar candy!

This will be A WEEKEND TO REMEMBER forever!

FUN FOR EVERYONE

Deb: you should--it is well worth it! Most people don't realize that in the fall, you get to see how things really are here. The crazy drivers are gone; the restaurants are not jammed and you can finally eat at the one you  couldn't get into during the summer months!

Henry: I am going to take that as a statement made by someone who has never been here...you should come in the fall to really get a good look---at the normal people who live here year round. There may not be a lot of us but we do live here and we LOVE it! (and we are not filthy rich!:)

I have to agree with you Paula, it is a wonderful place to visit in the fall, when all the hoopla is over and life goes back to normal.

Hi Paula, I love farms and Water Mill. We do not have many farms over here anymore. I'm sure things have quieted down in the Hamptons. I don't know how the residents deal with the Summer traffic.

Jackie: I was afraid the farming of local land was going to go the way of farms accross the nation---but they have been able to stick it out here with a few exceptions. I was in Michigan and taked to a local farmer where I grew up in that state and he tells me he has never been busier---China buys ethanol from sugar beet crops and that is sustaining the farmers there. That and the new idea to buy local for health reasons seems to be a fctor in all farming here in this country---it can only get bigger, hopefully!

Ellen: This is THE time to be here if you ask me---warm days, cool nights--it is perfect! Stop in to see me if you get out here....

Your pictures bring back so many memories.  Fall is just the most beautiful time in the Hamptons.  For twenty five years I went out to the Hamptons from the city to our house in Amagansett.  There were more farms and open land then.  Now, I go to Marthas Vineyard which also quiets down after the summer crowds leave and we get to enjoy the restaurants and shops without all of the tourists.

The Hamptons in the fall sounds like a wonderful place to visit.  I enjoyed this time of the year when my son was little.
