Santa Fe Fire Fighters Are Tough Enough To Wear Pink!

I was fortunate to be in my office at Santa Fe Realty Partners this afternoon when all of sudden our front desk team annouced there was a "fire truck" in front of our office. Within seconds, another annoucement said the fire fighters were inside the building. Immediately, I shut my computer down and raced for an exit. When I got downstairs I discovered these fire fighters were here to raise money for the 10th Annual Susan G. Komen Central New Mexico Race for the Cure. Yes, there were not only selling T-shirts. They were wearing them!  Our Santa Fe fire fighters are clearly tough enough to wear pink! Here they are in front of our Santa Fe main office this afternoon. This is why I love Santa Fe!

I understand what you’re saying when you say “tough enough to wear pink,” but I also think that plays in to so many stereotypes, and in light of all the bullying and suicides recently, I’m not sure I like that stereotype.

Hi Jim, like you I am very concerned about both bullying and suicides. The Santa Fe Fire Department slogan aka campaign was named "SFFD is tough enough to wear pink" and the back of their shirts had the slogan on it. Hence, I moved ahead with their slogan in my title given its recognition in our community. In talking with the Chief that day he told me it was a big shift from "red" and they really wanted to support the cause for a cure everywhere by selling these shirts with all proceeds going to the cause.

I apologize for any offense to you on behalf of the the SFFD slogan. From my experience, I know our firefighters do not play on stereotypes or support bullying or suicides in the work they do everyday in our community.

Great supportive post Emily!  My son-in-law is a fire fighter.  They do good where ever they go.  I am having trouble with Jim's comment.  Girls wear pink, boys wear blue---not really, but I think that is all that was intended.  And let's face it, all cancer survivors are pretty tough no matter if they are male or female!!

Emily:  This is great.  Real men wear pink.  It just shows that their self-images are strong enough, and they are secure enough... to do this.  Hooray for them !

Emily... I think Jim was way off-base with his comment.  I do not see ANYTHING even vaguely resembling the encouragement of a stereotype.  I am sorry he feels that way.  I would think that anyone who was secure enough within himself... would not be that thin-skinned.  And... I am very pro-gay rights... too... so I am not making this comment coming from a stereotyped point of view.

I noticed what you said in your response... and I totally agree with you.

Bullying is such a terrible thing... and is much too pervasive in our schools, and in our society.  Here is a post I wrote a few weeks about about bullying.  Who Killed Tyler Clementi ?  I invite you to read it.  I hope you don't mind my putting this link here.  Thanks in advance... and take care.

Emily:  It appears comment #11 is SPAM.  I have already  reported it to Active Rain.  I suggest you not click on the link at the bottom.  Take care... have a great weekend.

Karen, thank you for being a watchful and supportive eye. I reported the comment and membership immediately to ActiveRain. Hopefully, they will develop some filters to prevent this kind of thing from happening in the future.
