Are you ready to get rid of your land-line?

Phone and Magick JackLike every one else, I had seen the tacky infomercials about the Magic Jack on TV.  About a year ago, I was in Colombia South America, and I needed to call home to get important information.  I was sitting at a meeting, and I asked around where to get a calling card.  I thought that was the cheapest way to call in to the USA.  When you travel abroad you have to be very careful where you make your phone calls.  Years ago, I called my husband every other day for less than 5 minutes and three weeks later my phone bill was over $700.  I am not exaggerating.  It was almost as expensive as my three week hotel bill which was a nice hotel.
Going back to the meeting...    A guy asked around if anyone had a wireless laptop, which some one did, and he proceeded to disconnect the phone of the wall and hook up the the phone and  the magic Jack to the laptop,  I was able to call for free, and I was hooked.
I have used my Magic Jack for the past year, and I have been very satisfied with it.  It doesn't work with a Fax machine, but between the scanner on my fax machine, Docusign and the Fax at the office, I have yet to miss my Fax machine.

Pros of using Magic Jack

- No monthly phone bills plus the high land line add on taxes and service charges.
- You can call all over the USA whether a cell or land-line
- Inbound calls to the USA are free
- You can hook it up to any computer, and you always have the same phone number
- Caller ID
- International calls out of the USA for a fee
- $40 bucks to start and $20 every year after that
- Voice-mail that you can hear by calling your MJ phone number or open as MP3 file by email.
- The website says free Directory Assistance, although, I haven't used that service

Cons
- No Fax Service

Considering I use a landline for my phone and Internet connection, I don't think I'll be dropping it anytime soon.

Magic jack and other VOIP protocols work well if you have consistently fast (consistantly over 90Kbps) bandwith... I have tried several variations with less success, and it comes down to my internet... for those that have good or great internet, the savings can be great.

I got a Magic Jack just because I didn't want to throw out all my land line phones.  I don't use it much but it does work just fine.  It's too bad their reputation is tarnished by those awful commercials.

I've wondered why I have a land line....no one ever uses it, they all call my cell. Don't think Magic Jack is a good option for me, but cell is.

I'm taking baby steps in the VoIP world.  I have a business line that I have with Vonage.  It saves me almost $100/month and the call quality is fine.

I got rid of my land line phone about 2 years ago and I don't miss it at all. I have an HP all in one that scans documents in stead of the fax so I'm all set. From what I've rad about 20% of the homes in this country don't have one anymore. Who would have thought?

I loved my magicjack when I had a relative living in Brazil. We had one on our computer then we mailed one to him and when he hooked it up to his computer, we could now call him on a local number and we had no long distance charges at all, not that they are really that bad with the magicjack to begin with.

I dumped landline six years ago when cable intenet came to my area.  No one was ever there to answer it.  I just kept it forwarded to my cell phone.

The number portability act allowd me keep my business number and transfer my business number to my cell phone.

The only problem was fax.

I fixed that with a scanner and www.trustfax.com for incoming faxes (and the rare outgoing fax that just has to be a fax instead of an e-mailed PDF).

Not tied down anymore.

I still need a fax, so Jack is going to have to wait.  If my clients would just purchase scanners for their homes, then I could give up the land line.
