Typically I like to reference articles written in well respected main stream media publications but this blog entry caught my eye. "Chinese Investors - Immigrants Buying High-End Victoria, BC, Real Estate".
About a month ago we took on a client named Paulette Marsollier from Sotheby's Canada who sells real estate in Victoria. She did confirm there are a lot of people from China picking up property there.
Here are a few lines from the blog " Last year, Soufun, China's largest real estate website, organized a trip to the US in order to buy overseas real estate. This year, Canada was chosen as the destination for the real estate buying expedition. The people on these tours are looking to buy luxury homes for the purpose of immigration and so that they can send their children to Canada for study. The bulk of the activity is in the Vancouver area, but much of it is spilling over to Victoria."

Recently we asked Paulette to tell us a little about the Canada market and her response mirrored the blog content. Here is what she had to say:

"I have been in real estate for 25 years and am actively licensed and work in two local markets. The first market is Calgary, Alberta which has the third largest Chinese population in Canada. It is the Head Office city for the oil and natural gas companies which in turn offers many job and business opportunities. The Canadian education system is world renowned and Calgary has an excellent school system. I have been told by numerous entrepreneurs that Calgary is the easiest city to do business in. It is young with an average age of 34.5 years therefore a decision making population. My second market is Victoria, BC located on Vancouver Island known globally as the Garden City due to the Mediterranean, temperate climate. It is a beautiful city with the highest population of academics in Canada. Victoria is a city of entrepreneurs and small business owners and also a year round destination playground because of the climate and the beauty.
Approximately 20 years ago we experienced a large number of Chinese buyers from Hong Kong that made major purchases in Calgary. I was involved with numerous Chinese clients at that time. Today we are seeing buyers arriving from other areas of China and welcome them to Canada. The Chinese see the value in our country and our real estate. I think as my immigrant grandparents saw the value and accumulated real estate upon their arrival in Canada so do the Chinese; this certainly makes me appreciative of their values and entrepreneur spirit and their wish to expand into Canada.
