The kindness of strangers

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Pacheco Realty & Financial Services

Flowers in handGestures of kindness are less often heard of nowadays. So when you hear of good deeds from kindhearted individuals, it makes one’s heart overflow with gladness. It’s even more meaningful when these selfless acts are unsolicited, and, especially from people you have not met before.

In this business, it is very heartening to discover that acts of kindness still abound.

When my listed property was broken into, an agent called me that same day to tell me that she arrived at the house with the door wide open and a window glass cracked. It could have been worse, considering what other acts of desperation one may be led to commit. I was of course very grateful for that one phone call.

On another occasion, when the For Sale sign I had on one of my properties was blown away by strong winds, it landed two blocks away on the front yard of an elderly man. I received a call the following day - he said he had my sign, and that I can pick it up from him anytime.

How many more acts of kindness do we encounter day-to-day? These are deeds that never get published, never get on the headlines, but when they touch us, they touch our hearts as well.

“One can pay back the loan of gold, but one lies forever in debt to those who are kind.”

- Malayan Proverb

Kindness is actually easy but you have to care enough to actually give it.

Jane, most people are good, but acts of kindness do not make great news

Random Actis of kindness not only spread good will but good karma- I make it a habit for instance to share coupns at the grocery store- the other day a gave a lady a bunch of them and she was so appreciative since she used most of the products. Her smile was delightful!

Hi Jane,

So glad you experienced this act of kindness.  Good to be reminded that most people really are basically good!

Praful, touching people's lives with kindness is its own reward. The chance to be part of people's lives in a positive way is something we should grab.

Carla, When I came across that proverb, I kept it in my "chest" for use on occasions such as this. Glad you liked it.

Jon, When acts of kindness are combined with humor, it makes life even a cheerful place, although I probably would have screamed first if it were me that saw that "thing" in the pool!

Tim, So true! Kindness is very much felt when the heart is leading it.

Carla, Perhaps, we should write more about acts of kindness, to help remind us of the many good people amongst us.

Allison, Her smile is reward enough! Who would think coupons would bring such joy - but, yes, it certainly makes sense to let others make use of what you don't need.

Lisa and Robert, It's always nice to experience acts of kindness when you least expect it. Thanks for stopping by.

It seems like so many, sometimes myself included, are too busy to take the time to be kind.  it's sad.

Jane, act of kindness is something we all need to remind ourselves doing more often.  It is nice to be kind, and I believe good deed will follow.

You don't see it every day from realtors because it's easier for them to bitch about what you did wrong, rather than help you out or praise you for something you did right.  In 13 years of business I have received one letter from another agent thanking me for my work on a transaction we did together.  I am more proud of that than any from my customers.

Keith, A good deed is often hidden, and not bragged about - that's what makes it sincere. And that is why it takes extra effort to get it to news-worthy level.

Catherine, I'm sure acts of kindness are everywhere around you, you're just too busy to pay attention.

Mike, Little acts of kindness are easy to overlook, and so it's a good feeling to stop and appreciate these deeds.

Victor, You're right! We all need to hear something positive in this business.

Morris, I agree - Kind acts from within are much more appreciated because competition often overtakes kindness. And it doesn't have to be that way.

Ritchie, A kind act will put to shame one whose intent is flawed.
