HELP YOUR NEIGHBORS IN NEW HANOVER COUNTY NORTH CAROLINA

Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina at Wilmington logo

We all need a little help once in a while.  We can do everything right, follow all the rules and still, somehow end up in a place we never imagined.  Having to live with hunger shouldn't happen.  Having to put your child to bed hungry or send them to school without breakfast has to be one of the most devastating feelings and it shouldn't happen.

I have been blessed to never be in that position, but I have known people that were, and they were much like me.  They loved their families, they worked hard -- but sometimes that isn't enough and they need a hand UP.  They need a little asistance to get through the tunnel.  That's where YOU can help!

The current economy has hit most of us in one way or another.  Many of our neighbors in New Hanover County North Carolina are struggling with paying their bills and putting food on the table.  The most recent numbers show that 56,469 people in New Hanover County are at risk of hunger.  Of those; 16,897 are children and 6,641 are 65 or older.

YOU CAN HELPThe Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina at Wilmington is a non-profit organization helping to fight hunger in New Hanover, Columbus, Pender and Brunswick Counties.

There are a myriad of ways to help --

  • Volunteer to help in the warehouse or office
  • Host a Food Drive
  • Donate food items
  • Make a cash contribution -- 97% of all donations go to purchase food and support food programs

A few of the most needed items --

  • canned stews/soups
  • canned fruits or vegetables
  • canned tuna
  • cereal
  • rice

Unlike many of the Food Banks I've been involved with in the past, Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina at Wilmington also provides basic toiletries to their clients.  A few of those most needed items --

  • toothpaste
  • toilet paper
  • soap
  • diapers
  • shaving items

Tish I remember days where I had gone hungry when my daughter was little.  I wasn't starving, but there were certainly days where I didn't eat so that she could.  I remember when she was in elementary school, she would go to my grandmother's house after school while I was working.  I would make sure that it was late at night when I picked her up so that I could be assured that she had had enough to eat before I took her home to bare cupboards.  We have to feed the hungry.  Great call to action.

Charita ~  I experienced those days long ago when my children were very, very young.  This economy has dealt a heavy blow to all of us. There is nothing so devastating as worrying about the welfare of your own children.  Times are so difficult right now and it's important to look around and share what we can with our "neighbors" without judgment.

Liz & Bill ~ Thank you.  Helping those in need is near and dear to my heart and we have participated as a family as long as I can remember.  It is important to give of whatever we can to help people who find themselves in dire straits, even if it is just of our time or talents.

Joni ~ The food banks are all so low right now and need all the help they can get.  I am hoping to get a new listing signed tomorrow on a high-end property.  My goal is to host a Broker's Open and ask the attendees to bring a canned good or staple which we can donate to the Food Bank.

Very nice post Tish, I hope that is is widely read in your area and your call to action is heard. Our local Boy Scouts have taken up the cause here to get donations for our local food shelf, what a wonderful way to help your neighbors. It is amazing to see what just a few cans from each home in the community ends up becoming when all gathered together in one place.

This is just awesome. I know alot of businesses who contribute to similar organizations and the feeling is just wonderful. It's great knowing that there are alot of concerned citizens out there who care for the needs of those unfortunate ones. I pray that this will continue through out many years.

Steve ~ We have donated to the Boy Scouts food drive many times over the years and are always amazed at the level of participation.

Will ~ Back in the days of owning my own Brokerage, we held a Christmas Party for all of our Clients, Customers, Associates & Friends.  It was a big blow-out and admission was a gift for a child.  Our tree was always brimming with donations.  It was wonderfully fun and rewarding.

Food banks are very important.  My sister, the Professor of Nutrition at UDEL has us all into Food Banks, it's the right thing to do. :) Gail
