Moose Monday - Those Strange Places Where You Find Moose!

By
Education & Training

It's Moose Monday and I got a very heavy and solid moose to share from Red Lodge, Montana.  It is actually made of steel and reinforced so it can withstand any bear attack!

This moose made of steel can be found on a heavy duty garbage can at the corner of 11th Street and Broadway Avenue in Red Lodge.

Two bull moose on the same corner - Red Lodge, Montana

Now something you don't see often, two bull moose in the same photo!

This moose art garbage can is appropriately located next to The Pollard which has moose in its logo.  The Pollard Hotel is the place where I stayed when I first visited and fell in love with Red Lodge.  It comes with a dining room (top notch food and service), a gym and racquetball courts.  Please take the time to click on the blue link above to experience the beauty and elegance of this historic establishment in Red Lodge.

Some interesting facts about The Pollard:

- The Hotel's telephone number from about 1903 was "1" (eventually it became (406) 446-0001).

- Both Buffalo Bill Cody and Calamity Jane had frequented the establishment in the late 1890's to early 1900's.

Happy Moose Monday!

Nice lodge! Nice Art work of the Moose! Nice place to own and meet people! Nice slice of history concerning Buffalo Bill! I wonder how many kids today know about, or ever read a book about Buffalo Bill Cody and Calamity Jane? Thanks for letting me step into your world! Let's hope Moose is never on the endangered species list!

I think the moose on the garbage can is really neat.  By the way, is the moose the state animal for Montana?

This is the first time I have stumbled across Moose Monday.  Around our house it is all about moose and bear because of a favorite story we read to the kids, so I really enjoyed seeing these moose!

Paul,

It it another way to get inspiration for the beginning of the week.

It funny how creativity some times is only a few photos and a blog post away!   :)

Myrl,

Although they both start with the same first two letters, Moose is not the state animal for Montana They may change that if they start catching on with my regular Montana Moose Monday posts...  :)

The state animal for Montana is the Grizzly Bear, same as for California but I checked online and they differentiated it by stating California Grizzly Bear for your state.  But California's Grizzly Bear was adopted as the state animal in 1953 while Montana's Grizzly Bear was not adopted till 1983.  At one time, the Grizzly Bear was widespread in the Great Plains and the entire West. Now it survives mainly in national parks such as Yellowstone, Glacier, Banff, Jasper, and Denali. It can weigh up to 850 pounds (the moose can weigh up to 1500 pounds).  The moose is the state animal for Main.

I hope you enjoyed these fun facts as much as I did finding them out.

Have you ever seen a moose in Maine? Now that's an animal that deserves respect! I was in the front seat of a vehicle driving as a passenger when the driver slammed on his breaks, my head hit the windshield and I saw and heard the male swipe his horns (or whatever you call them) across the windshield! I thought my eyes were going to pop out of my head when I saw the size of that animal! I'l have to visit you again on Moose Monday next week.

Patricia,

No, I have not seen a moose in Maine but I heard a few stories.   Thank you for sharing your story of the bull moose from Maine.  I can imagine he must have had very big antlers and they were a little too close for comfort when you were in Maine in the passenger seat of a car.   I am hoping someone here on AR will post the first photo of a Maine moose.   We get to see a lot of moose from across the country (Alaska got the most moose so far) on Moose Monday but still waiting to see the R.E.S.P.E.C.T moose from Maine.

WOW! That is beautiful art work! Too beautiful for the side of a garbage can! But it is good to decorate the can and make them more pleasing to the eye...I just hope they keep them clean!

Hi Gerry, I like the idea of decorating the trash cans, art can be anywhere and the Pollard is beautiful.  It looks like a wonderful historic Hotel.

Sussie,

Who said the sides of the garbage can could not be beautiful?  :)

They do keep them clean.  Since they are very sturdy, they keep the garbage in and out of sight (unlike the old plastic ones where the wind could have blown the cover and/or garbage could end up falling on the sidewalk when it got too full).

Mary,

Art... in all places... makes the world a more beautiful place.  The Pollard is beautiful and part of the Red Lodge history.  I would say that is at the heart of the historic district.  I am glad you check it out virtually.  :)

Russel,

No worries.  I also did not see much moose in SoCal when I used to live there.   I think there are way too many tourists in CA and they don't want to get irritated and become chargers (not to be confused with the San Diego Chargers).  :)
