California New CALGreen Code and What It Means To You
There are some new building codes going into effect January 1, 2011 that you may want to know about. California will be going green with the CALGreen program!
The California Green Building Standards is an educational PDF where you can read all about the program. A quick overview of what the program is intended to do is:
- Help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from buildings
- Help promote healthier places to live and work
- Help reduce water and energy consumptions
- To respond to the directives by the Governor
This Green Building Standards Code was initiated in 2008 and went into effect in 2009, but state compliance will be mandatory in 2011. For businesses in California this means that every new building built in California will:
- Reduce water consumption by 20%
- Divert 50% of construction waste from landfills
- Install low polluting-emitting materials
- Require special moisture sensing irrigation systems for larger landscaping projects
- Require energy inspections for non-residential buildings over 10,000 sq. feet to make sure they are energy efficient.
If you live in Citrus Heights, the city is hosting an open house to help you understand the changes that are taking effect.
