I am very lucky to have some very loyal subscribers to one of my weekly newsletters...
I purposely only built my list by the books, so that they would have to sign themselves up and then click the confirming link in the email that the system shoots back to them...just so I could not get accused of spam. They signed up for a weekly ezine, so with the exception of only one important notice, that is all they have received from me - one email per week, since I started the newsletter. So I know that I did nothing wrong, I provide informative, slightly humorous articles...and then one person clicks the Report As Spam button in their email program...whether on purpose or hopefully accidentally (I have done it accidentally before...Gmail is nice enough to let me undo the damage), and now I see this "Abuse Complaints: 1" notice on my stats page. It's disheartening.
So, if it can happen when you are doing everything by the books and providing, what I consider to be, quality content...imagine what can happen if you just start tossing peoples names from meetings and office associates, vendors, etc...into your email list. Don't do it people. Those lists are gold mines...and should be harvested accordingly.
If you are on any of my lists, know that I appreciate you dearly!
UPDATE: I just received the following email from the person who reported me as spam...I feel better now :-)
