Does Double Opt-in Email List Creation Really Protect You?

I am very lucky to have some very loyal subscribers to one of my weekly newsletters...

I purposely only built my list by the books, so that they would have to sign themselves up and then click the confirming link in the email that the system shoots back to them...just so I could not get accused of spam.  They signed up for a weekly ezine, so with the exception of only one important notice, that is all they have received from me - one email per week, since I started the newsletter.  So I know that I did nothing wrong, I provide informative, slightly humorous articles...and then one person clicks the Report As Spam button in their email program...whether on purpose or hopefully accidentally (I have done it accidentally before...Gmail is nice enough to let me undo the damage), and now I see this "Abuse Complaints: 1" notice on my stats page.  It's disheartening.

So, if it can happen when you are doing everything by the books and providing, what I consider to be, quality content...imagine what can happen if you just start tossing peoples names from meetings and office associates, vendors, etc...into your email list.  Don't do it people.  Those lists are gold mines...and should be harvested accordingly.

If you are on any of my lists, know that I appreciate you dearly!

UPDATE:  I just received the following email from the person who reported me as spam...I feel better now :-)

"Christine,

I am so sorry, I did accidentally hit the SPAM button, and when I realized it, I couldn't recall it, and I didn't recognize the "email address for the newsletter".  So, if you can reinstate me I would appreciate it.

Thank you."

I specifically choose not to do double opt-in for one of my lists just to streamline the process.  I do have a big, disclaimer thing at the bottom of each weekly email that reminds them why they are getting this email and how to unsubscribe.

I have noticed that I don't get any more spam complaints on this list than I do on my double opt-in lists.  I know double opt-in is the smart way to do it, but from a marketing standpoint it's a pain in the behind!

Gayla - you are a brave and fearless woman!  LOL  What program, if you don't mind my asking, are you using to send out your campaigns?  I know it's a pain in the butt...however, sometimes I  just have to follow the law...I have been threatened with having my list shut down several years ago when I tried to do an import rather than a double opt-in...it's just not worth it to me anymore, but I am glad you haven't suffered any reprocussions :-)

Lou - you always say the nicest things, thanks for stopping by...

Everyone - There is an update posted on the main message above...check it out! :-)

Christine, there are a lot of debates on single opt-in vs double. There is no right or wrong solution but what is convenient for your target audience. Somehow I get spammed from sites that I have never even opted in.

Song - thank you for your comment...spam is truly a "4 letter word" in my book! I really get most upset when they hi-jack my contact page form so that they can sell me something!!!  OH well, you are right, it's a personal choice...I still choose double opt-in though.
