Old Chair Made New

By
Home Stager with North Fork Home Staged to Sell

Sometimes we get so used to our furniture that we don't notice how old and tired it really has become.  This chair was given to me twenty years ago by my mother in law.  I liked the lines of the chair, but not the old fashioned tapestry.  Never one to add to the landfill when a piece of furniture can be repurposed a project was begun; I ripped it apart carefully to use the old covers as patterns.  Then I sanded and refreshed the wood with some stain.  I also added a light polyurethane coating.  I had a bolt of beautiful gold fabric I had bought for $5 at a close out sale at a local reupohlstery shop this summer.  I used the old covering for my pattern, and then used it for additional support under the new fabric.  The fabric was attached with a staple gun and lots of staples!  Then trim to cover the staples with a glue gun.  An inexpensive project with dramatic results!

Cindy -- that's a great project and your instructions sound like it wasn't too difficult.  How long does something like this take to complete?  It looks like a great chair now and SO much more fashionable!

Cindy - My mother has that exact chair!  You made that look awfully easy.  I'd love to give it a go.  Those are great step by step photos, too!

Maureen and Sally,

It doesn't take that long.  You need a straight edge screw driver and some needle nose pliers to rip off the tacks holding the old cover, be careful because you want the old cover as a pattern.  I didn't show the back, but make sure you save the hard cardboard form that is inside the back.  Spray adhesive holds the fabric to the cardboard and then you staple that first from the front. so it stays firm.  Then use the old pieces as the pattern, cut a little extra, pin over the old and use it for extra padding.  Staple corners and then middle and so on to make sure it lays smooth.  Glue gun the trim  over the staples, use a pencil or chopstick to push down the trim firmly (so you do not burn your fingers)  -  I did it over a few days, lightly sanded with a sanding block after I took it apart, then wiped on a little stain, let it dry and sprayed with some polyurethane.  The stain and poly I let dry for a day.  Ripping it apart an hour or so, cutting it out was short, stapling a glueing a few hours, interrupted by some chores and phone calls.

Cindy-I love the fact that you were able to take something old and remake it into a beautiful piece, and not clog our landfills.  You must have a lot of patience because those arms looked like a very detailed process.

Cindy,

No one would ever know that this chair was not done by a professional upholsterer!  Fabulous work and thank you for explaining how to accomplish this project in such great detail...  although to me you would be a hard act to follow!!!

Linda, I would never claim to be a professional reupholstery, but I have done a few pieces over the years.  I think the biggest thing is not to be afraid to rip it apart and to just go for it.  Thanks!
