There are certain Warning Signs of Fraud, that can tip you off BEFORE you become a victim...

1.) Does it sound too good to be true?  (Offers on Craigslist for example...)

2.) Pressures you to act "right away."  (A valid offer or service will not strong-arm you to act right away.)

3.) Guarantees success.  (Does anything truely come without risk?)

4.) Promises unusually high returns...

5.) Requires an upfront investment - even for a "free prize."  (Think of a Work-From-Home scam).

6.) Buyers want to overpay you for an item, and have you send them the difference.  This was rampant on Craiglist housing category a few years back.

7.) Doesn't have the look of a real business.

8.) Something just doesn't "feel right."  Use your discernment!

9.) Check your monthly bank and CC statements.  Notice changes / charges you don't recognize.

10.) Order a copy of your Credit Report once a year: www.AnnualCreditReport.com

Here are some FRAUD FACTS:

1.) Your bank will never email or call you for you account number.

2.) You should never be asked to wire money to someone you don't know.

3.) Be cautious of "work-from-home" positions.

4.) Check out the company with the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

5.) There are no legitimate jobs that involve RESHIPPING items, or financial instruments from your home.

6.) Foreign lotteries are illegal in the U.S.  You Cannot win, no matter what they say.

Out-Smart The Crooks First...

1.) Never click on a link inside an email to visit a website.  Type the address into your browser instead.

2.) Verify companies with the BBB.

3.)  Report online Fraud to the Federal Trade Commission at www.FTC.Gov/complaint

4.) Keep all of your receipts, statements, and packing slips.  Look them over for accuracy as well.

5.) SHRED confidential documents.  Don't just toss them in the trash.
