Lincoln City Geocache Day: Not only was it fun, but educational as well

How do you as smaller city in Oregon get some 250 people visitors to your city and teach them about the history at the same time? You set up a Geocache mystery adventure and people from all around come, that’s how!

History of Lincoln City, Oregon

Lincoln City Geocache Day 10-16-2010
The kids finding the first cache of the mystery

Geocachers checking in at the Lincoln City Community Center

Well, The Lincoln City Parks and Recreation department did that and they apparently do it twice a year and since we are fairly new to Geocaching, we got involved in this one, met some great people from all walks of life and even got to watch what I call a feeding frenzy at the beach.

Lincoln City Boardwalk

During this 3 hour adventure, we got to go visit the boardwalk, the library and even a local garden to look for the clues and learn about the history of Lincoln City. I’ve been going to Lincoln City my whole life because we had a cabin on Devils Lake in Lincoln City and even I was going to places that I had never been and learned so much about this wonderful community.

I can’t wait to go back and take what I have learned and write a complete post about all the local attractions that make Lincoln City so great and rich with history.

Hi Todd - What a great event!  Making anything interactive makes it stick so much more with young or old.  Your seagull pictures were amazing.  I am glad I am not the guy with one on my head--I love nature, but that is a little too upclose and personal!

Fun and educational are a great combination. It sounds like a really cool way to learn the history of an area. And the photos are exceptional.

It was a lot of fun and I think the fact that they made it educational as well as fun it was made it such a successful event. I applaud the city for getting people to their city for a free event and I know most of us spent money there which also made the local business there real happy. From what I understand all the things for the event were donated, so it didn't cost the city anything for this event.

Todd, what a fabulous idea!  Your city deserves getting all that attention for thinking of an event like this one!  Looking forward to reading more ...  Never mind the kids, Lee and I will set a free day and hit the streets in the Triangle! to explore geocaching!  I can't wait!!
